A colleague has just told me that he can only access 4o for a month's free trial and then will have to pay. This seems contrary to all the messaging; can anyone provide any clarity, please?

GPT-4o is available to both free and paid users, but there are differences in the level of access and usage limits between these tiers.

For free tier users, GPT-4o is the default model with a limit on the number of messages they can send, which varies based on current usage and demand. When GPT-4o is unavailable, free tier users will be switched back to GPT-3.5. Free users also have limited access to advanced tools such as data analysis, file uploads, browsing, discovering and using GPTs, and vision capabilities source (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7102672-how-can-i-access-gpt-4-gpt-4-turbo-and-gpt-4o#h_f6a24d9dd8).

Free tier users can use GPT-4o only a limited number of times within a three-hour window. Once they reach the limit, they will be invited to continue their conversation using GPT-3.5 or to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus source (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9275245-using-chatgpt-s-free-tier-faq).

On the other hand, GPT-4o Plus users have 5x the rate limits of free users with 80 messages every three hours. They also have access to GPT-4 with 40 messages every three hours source (https://community.openai.com/t/764353).

GPT-4o is also available to anyone with an OpenAI API account. After making a successful payment of $5 or more (usage tier 1), users will be able to access the GPT-4, GPT-4 Turbo, and GPT-4o models via the OpenAI API source (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7102672-how-can-i-access-gpt-4-gpt-4-turbo-and-gpt-4o#h_9bddcd317c).

There is no mention of a one-month free trial for GPT-4o in the provided sources. It's possible that your colleague may be referring to a different plan or misunderstanding the terms. It would be best to direct them to the official OpenAI documentation or support for accurate information.
