Steps to reproduce:

  1. Ensure memory is turned on and collect memories.
  2. Continue to store more memories.

Expected result:

Memories remain, or are altered based on conversations. However, do not erase unless specifally prompted to do so or if there is new, conflicting information

Actual result:

All older memories are erased, replaced by 1-2 new memories.

This issue seemed to have completely disapeared a week or so ago. I would check daily and memories were only updated meanigfully, but never erased. Yesterday, I noticed that all existing memories had been completely cleared without any prompting by me or manual clearing of memory.

Now I just noticed while using 4o, no new memories are being created. Initially, that model created many memories but then stopped after roughly 12 memories were created.

I also noticed that the memory issues had been resolved. But GPT4o just deleted most of the 80+ memories, and replaced most with a giant one, that includes numbers in brackets.

I didn't grab the first memory because it contained personal information, but that is all there is now.

That’s so weird. 4o was storing memories very different for me. However, I think I have custom instructions in there instructing to store memories in smaller meaningful chunks rather than larger blocks.
On the bright side, once all of this is fixed, 4o has been abiding by my custom instructions WAY better than 4. And it would bring up memories into our conversations frequently.
I can’t blame the deletion on 4o though because it happened while using 4, the night before the release.

I had this issue yesterday, all the gpt memories were erased, if it's related my android app also lost all it's settings and got logged out

New behavior today while using GPT-4o. A new memory was created, all other existing ones cleared, and now left with these empty memories except for bracketed numbers. Note that the new memory was a string but I covered it for privacy reasons

this happened to me as well, today was the second occurrence. the first occurrence was the day i clicked the button "try it out" to use the new 4o model a couple days ago and lost everything. truly devastating. so working diligently to regain that knowledge and it happens again today.

am i correct to assume that this personalization/memory feature has a limited user group? im not accustomed to testing software, so i didn't have enough foresight to prepare for the risk associated with it.

100% agreed it’s brutal. This has been happening to me since I first got access to memory a few weeks back. I was so excited for the memory feature I spent the first full day building it. Later that day it wiped. Each time I started over, I spent less effort because I assume it will happen again. I was hopeful that somehow 4o would have corrected the issue. Without knowing how the memory is stored, or why it was happening, that may or may not be a logical hope, but was hoping nonetheless.
I think I’m going to go easy with trying to have conversations geared to memories until I’ve seen that it’s been corrected and there’s a good amount of time in place. Or better yet, possibly a public release from OpenAI stating the issue has been improved or corrected, or at least there’s some backups in place. If that happened, I’d feel confident in putting the time into it again

The thing that I am hopeful for is with the new voice feature, having natural conversations coupled with video may be a source of documenting a TON of memory extremely fast. So it may be possible to store as many memories that took weeks through text in something like under an hour. We’ll see how it goes…

Yah this is happening to me too, I lost hundreds of memories trying to train the ai to be my assistant. What a waste of time.

I store my memory in an external doc and copy and paste/upload.

#

That way I can use with other AIs too

Also, I made an interesting discovery that seems to be holding and I just tweeted about it.

What you can do is to put all the memories you want to keep in one or several files. Then create a new GPT, add those files and give it instructions on how to interpret them.

When you chat with GPT-4o, you @mention the custom GPT. I found that if I ask something to the custom GPT first thing in a conversation, I can keep on talking to 4o directly and it will somehow remember what was in the files of the custom GPT.

I just tried it again, I uploaded 2 files to the custom GPT. I started a new Chat GPT 4o conversation and @mention and asked the custom GPT about something in file #1. I then closed the @mention box and asked 4o something about file #2, it answered and continues to do so!
