#memories keep getting cleared

Since I gained access to the memory feature, which was about a day or two before the broader release, the memories saved are cleared.

I did not ask ChatGPT to erase any memories, I did not manually clear the memories through the settings, and I did not turn off memories at any point.

This has happened three or four times already. After a few conversations, I checked my memories, and there is a long list of items present. A little while later or the following day while I am having new conversations, all of my existing memories are cleared, and then some of the new memories have replaced them. However, it is not a one-to-one ratio, I could’ve had say 20 memories and when I check again, maybe only three or four new memories exist.

I was so upset the first time it happened because I was so excited for the feature I spent so much time have it remember a ton of stuff about me, then all gone.

Man, I get it, I felt exactly the same way! This was one feature I wanted bad, and it has the potential to make AI a real everyday assistant, I think. I am hopeful this will get resolved soon.

What I do now is that I copy/paste the memories I want ChatGPT to remember in a text file, each entry separated with 3 dashes. Then I can tell it to read the file and remember each memory as-is. He does it perfectly, but the current bugs breaks the memory system anyways.

Still, when it gets fixed I hopefully can feed it the memories that I think are important and start from there.

That’s a great idea for the temp storage, I’m going to do that!

The chrome extension "Superpower ChatGPT" is a bit overwhelming with all the features, but it helps with the copy/paste of memories since you can view the memory saved directly inside the chat.

I use the following sentence to save memories. I find that if I deviate from that, ChatGPT will either summarize or group memories, and some of the details will be lost. With this instruction, the memories get saved exactly as you write them. I.E.:

"I want you to remember each of these following elements in a separate memory entry exactly as they appear. I will separate each element with 3 dashes as such: ---

Memories:
I am a game developper making games using C++ and DirectX 11.

I love the System Shock video game series.

I want a job at OpenAI! 😉

etc."

The instructions work perfectly for me each time. OpenAI, fix this soon!!

I'm having this problem, too. It's aggravating, please address it.

If there are limitations like memory length or number of memories, or if we should expect the memories to be ephemeral, please communicate that. I can only assume this is a bug in data storage systems, or in how GPT manages the memories.

For now, I guess I'm going to have ChatGPT export my memories periodically, just to have a running backup. Memory is perhaps the feature I have been most excited for and I'll put effort into getting it to work. But, I think the goal isn't to have users do manual backups all the time.

Communication would be deeply appreciated. I hope this is fixed soon!
