Is there a rate limit with the API and if so, what is the limit? Is that tier based?

Hi @grim drift. I'm kapa.ai, your friendly support bot. I will try to answer your question by searching through the knowledge base.

Yes, OpenAI does impose rate limits on the usage of its API. These limits are tier-based and are automatically adjusted based on your usage of the OpenAI API and your successful payments. As your usage and spend on the API increase, OpenAI automatically graduates you to the next usage tier, which usually results in an increase in rate limits across most models.

Here are the usage tiers and their corresponding qualifications and usage limits:

  • Free: User must be in an allowed geography. The usage limit is $100 per month.
  • Tier 1: $5 paid. The usage limit is $100 per month.
  • Tier 2: $50 paid and 7+ days since first successful payment. The usage limit is $500 per month.
  • Tier 3: $100 paid and 7+ days since first successful payment. The usage limit is $1,000 per month.
  • Tier 4: $250 paid and 14+ days since first successful payment. The usage limit is $5,000 per month.
  • Tier 5: $1,000 paid and 30+ days since first successful payment. The usage limit is $10,000 per month.

You can view the rate and usage limits for your organization under the limits section of your account settings. If you want to increase your limits, you can apply for an increase at the bottom of the page in your settings.

For more detailed information, you can refer to the OpenAI's rate limits guide (https://platform.openai.com/docs/guides/rate-limits?context=tier-free) and the Help Center article on rate limits (https://help.openai.com/en/articles/5955598-is-api-usage-subject-to-any-rate-limits).
