What are the restrictions between the various free or paid accounts, may 1 person have more than 1 account with the intention of using both for personal use?

Yes, a user can have more than one OpenAI account. However, there are certain restrictions in place:

  1. Phone Verification: A phone number can only ever be used for phone verification up to 3 times. This means if you have 3 OpenAI accounts, you can use the same number for all three when completing phone verification on each initial API key generation across those three accounts. For anti-fraud and abuse reasons, OpenAI does not allow you to unlink phone numbers from OpenAI accounts to free up that number for reuse. Deleting an OpenAI account does not free up the number to get around the limit. There is no workaround for this.   2. Email Addresses: Every email address is unique per account, so a different email address is required for new accounts. If you don't have an alternative email address, you can try using what's known as an email subaddress. For example, instead of jane@example.com, try jane+alt@example.com. Emails to this address should still go to the same inbox (everything after the + is typically ignored by your email provider), but OpenAI will treat this as a unique email address.   3. Account Usage: OpenAI has rate limits in place to protect against abuse or misuse of the API, ensure fair access to the API, and manage the aggregate load on its infrastructure. These rate limits restrict the number of times a user or client can access OpenAI's services within a specified period of time.
