#ChatGPT writes g'(x) as g(x)

ChatGPT's math formatting appears to show "g'(x)" as "g(x)", which causes inaccuracies and confusion when asking it about math concepts. It appears to me as though this is an error with the math formatter and not the model, although I am not positive.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Ask GPT4: How do you represent "the derivative of g(x)" mathematically?

Expected result:

g'(x)

Actual result:

g(x)

I can't reliably reproduce this. The model knows several ways to write it, but when I'm specific it is too. I think you found a hallucination, how consistently are you seeing this?

I tested with 3.5 (more messages to test with) and two conversations with different approaches got the correct notation.

I think its more about fine tunning.

I'm guessing it's an error with how the ios app specifically renders math, then. If you slow down the attached video GPT4 types "(g'(x)" before it coverts to math formatting.

I can confirm that this is the case. I opened the chat in my web browser and it represented g'(x) correctly.

I've let someone internally know about this!
