#Network errors when using corporate proxy

Hello since yesterday employees report that they can't use ChatGPT (any model, personal accounts) when connected to our corporate proxy. I confirmed this. It throws a network error once and then it wont respond to any input at all (not even with errors). When disconnecting from the VPN and reloading the page everything works fine again.

So please stop shadow-banning our IPs by removing AS 24940 (136.243.0.0/16) from whatever blacklist you are using thank you.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Connect from OpenAI from AS 24940 IP range.
  2. Write anything to the GPT

Expected result:
Not being blocked using an IP from a common hosting provider.

Actual result:
Get network error once and then no further network errors and never any response.

Additional information
Browser: any
OS: any, except official mobile app (no clue why).
Subscription: ChatGPT Plus (tho likely also with free tier)
Model: any

VPNs are known to cause issues, there is no way around it

#

it is a feature, not a bug, if there are too many users on chatgpt at the same time within the same IP, it will give you increasingly more capchas or even block you outright

#

in some cases, it will just have network errors

But why? I understand if you do this for the free tier, but for PAID accounts? common

this is to prevent bad actors from massively automating requests

#

paid accounts are also a target for this sort of autoamtion

gilded peak
#

ok then why not ban or rate limit these accounts? Are you also banning CGNAT IPs for that reason?

#

IP bans make no sense if you also 1) Rquire accounts to start with and 2) Can link exxagated request to these accounts

This is happening to me as well - I'm paying for Team and Personal accounts and if I use my accounts with too many requests (but under the maximum requests per 3 hours) my IP gets filtered (banned). To me this is not getting what I'm paying for - I'm paying to get banned from the service if I use the service too much (but within limits)? OpenAI engineers really need to figure this out. This doesn't happen at all with Gemini Advanced (paid tier). Gemini is quickly catching up to OpenAI and at some point I will just cancel my OpenAI accounts - as will others. This hassle with not being able to use my paid accounts if I use the account with increased usage (but within limits) is quickly turning into a "show-stopper".

@gilded peak can you send me your IP address?

I'm tracking down a few issues that could cause this.

agile furnace

@winter spire are you able to do the same?

Here's the issue. I am a instructor at a major university. We are currently evaluating the use of these tools at an administrative level and for pedagogical purposes. Our campus uses dynamically allocated IP addresses except for hardwired ethernet connections. Most students and faculty use the wireless with Cisco AnyConnect. The IP addresses for UNT are always (University of North Texas) are 129.120.xx.xx. The Cisco IP addresses for UNT are always 172.20.xx.xx.

Usually, there is not a problem with either IP address ranges - UNLESS - activity queries exceeds some threshold (say 40/3hrs or 100/3hrs). For my part, I don't usually exceed these thresholds. But when I do I get my IP filtered (blocked). Takes a day or so to begin working again.

#

To be clear the AnyConnect VPN or the dynamically allocated IP's (with the WIFI router for example) DO NOT have a problem with connecting to paid accounts on OpenAI.

I do see an issue where Cloudflare thinks your ASN is an open proxy. I've just fixed that. Let me know if it's any better.

winter spire
#

Thanks - will do.

Whatever you did fixed the problem.

#

Which is working now.

agile furnace
#

Nice! Sorry that was happening.

I'm working on anohter issue that should make sure no one else runs into a similar situation. What should have been happening is that you might get a Cloudflare challenge but you're able to pass it and everything works, but that was not happening for you.

We just removed the challenge all together for you : )

Nice!

Thanks.

I'm having a couple of issues around network errors generally in the last few hours with my custom GPT. Not sure if this is related

agile furnace
#

It's possible. Do you have a screenshot of the error?

timber stone
#

It's just a standard network error. It'll get to the end or near the end of generation and then just spit out a network error. I've tried across multiple networks, on the Android app and Chrome. Obviously on Chrome it just gives me the option to regenerate the response, but the same thing happens

The cloudflair challenge is in a loop and I can't login at all now. I'm locked out it seems. Update - I can login again now, however this issue of the IP filtering is happening again. Thanks for trying.

timber stone
#

As you can see, it gets to basically the end/near the end and then throws the error. It might just be a load issue

winter spire
#

Now I can login but it is the network error problem again.

@timber stone that's not related.

@winter spire are you able to send me a screenshot of anything in the developer network tab that's being blocked. Example below

All is well for now. When the problem happens again I will look to the developer network tab.
