#Custom GPTs will not reference knowledge files

Since yesterday, whenever I ask a custom GPT to reference content in the knowledge documents I uploaded, it tries then gives me an error stating that it is unable, though this used to work fine. I've deleted a custom GPT, thinking it had gone "bad", so to speak, and created a new one, but the issue persists. Examples below.

Steps to reproduce:

You
Reference the Context - Characters document uploaded to Knowledge and give me a list of the main characters

ChatGPT
GPT Builder
I'm unable to directly access or extract content from uploaded documents, including the "Context - Characters" document you mentioned. However, if you provide details or a summary from that document, I can certainly help discuss or analyze the main characters based on the information you share.

For assistance with the main characters in your narrative, could you provide a brief overview or key points about them from the document?

Expected result:

Example of a similar query from a previous chat, with names redacted:
You
Reference <name of document>, particularly in chapters 2 and 5, to understand who <character name> (a Nysean human) and <character name> (a Metxenoi) are
GPT
The Outline Chronicler
In "<name of document>" <character name> and <character name> are introduced as representatives of different human groups in Sylfaen, each with their distinct background and characteristics.

Actual result:

I'm also seeing the same issue in another custom GPT, so the ability to reference uploaded documents appears to be affected overall, and it happens both on Mac and iOS. Really hoping that this is not the new intended functionality!

Can confirm, experiencing the same issue, with my private customGPTs as well as public creations by others. Tried on Windows, iOS & Mac.

I am experiencing the same phenomenon. It became unstable a few days ago and later became inaccessible. I would like to believe it is a bug.
If this is an excessive limitation, users will not get a practical response from ChatGPT.

I received unfortunately a "standard" and "poor" answer of support yesterday

#

telling to check my connection, my VPN, my browser, my cache, etc. Have the feeling that the support does not read what you are writing them while you try explain and partially already troubleshoot the issue pointing into a specific direction

so just in case this helps I found a way of having our customGPT work again. let me explain : it looks like OpenAI has changed the way knowledge files are searched. I have removed "instructions" in the knowledge file for example I had the following text in the knowledge file :
If a user asks you about your version, be exhaustive in your answer and always reply with the following text delimited by triple quotes ''' <text>'''
my customGPT works again by removing the first part which is instruction focused

#

I tried with 5 sections of my previous knowledge file and removing the instruction part for each paragraph makes the customGPT work again

#

but nonetheless we spent 3 months of intense development on a GPT and such non-regression problems should not happen or at least OpenAi (with all due respect) should be more transparent about important changes in the logic how knowledge files are read

Glad to hear you found a workaround, and thanks for sharing it! I fully agree with your comment on transparency. Unfortunately in my use case, the knowledge docs I have never did contain instructions so there's nothing for me to remove to get it working.

I am having a similar issue that isn't predicated on knowledge files. My CustomGPT would typically ask me to upload a file so they could quiz me on it (I'm preparing for an exam). Now, it will prompt me to upload a file, and when I do, it will say, similar to above, that it can't access the content of uploaded files at the moment (it doesn't search its knowledge/the file at all), and otherwise spouts generic nonsense back at me. Trying on Edge (as opposed to Chrome) resulted in the GPT generating a random image and hallucinating text afterwards, suggesting that it's probably a bug. Did all the usual troubleshooting as well

This hallucination was so absurd that it made me laugh:
You
I’m asking you where you got the content that you were summarizing for me, because it wasn't from my uploaded documents. What book was that?
GPT
Manuscript Revision
The content I summarized previously was created based on a misunderstanding of your request, not from an actual book or manuscript. I mistakenly provided a fictional summary that does not reflect any real or specific manuscript.
You
You just made up a story and summarized it for me in response to my prompt?
GPT
Manuscript Revision
Yes, that's correct. ...

You love to see it. I hope this gets fixed soon as reliable file uploads and analysis is one of the best things about the software currently

ok sorry to hear that my workaround may not apply to you. I'll keep this thread posted as soon as I have the next updated from the OpenAI support team

Me
Here is an uploaded chapter
GPT
It looks like there might have been an issue with the upload, as I can't see any files or text from a chapter here. Could you please try uploading the chapter again or paste the text you'd like to discuss? I'm here to help with any specific questions or feedback you need on your research.

#

Alternatively: It seems there was an attempt to upload a file, but I can't process or access files directly. Could you paste the text of the chapter here instead? This way, we can discuss its content in detail.

The GPT is actually referencing a technical issue now for this issue for the first time (that I've seen):
GPT
I can provide feedback and insights based on your manuscript, including summarizing the final chapter. However, due to a technical issue I'm currently unable to access the manuscript directly.

That's at least a start!

for your information the error seems corrected on OpenAI side. I tested quickly this morning with my old knowledge file and it shows again "Searching my knowledge"

Thanks! Just verified this as well.

I can confirm, it seems to be fixed

Mine will Search Knowledge, but it's not retaining any of the knowledge it searched. So, as they are rolling out 'Memory', do you think they accidently stripped some accounts of the in-thread memory it used to have?

I'm now getting network errors again with this. Don't think it's related, but it's struggling. Could be a usage issue
