Expected result:

The picture get saved on the device as PNG

Actual result:

The picture get saved on the device as WEBP

Additional information

Note: This seem to be a recent change, possibly by design. However, there was no announcement confirming this new behavior is expected. Many users reported being inconvenienced by this change since WEBP is not supported on every websites or applications.

Observations

The new format does not affect the quality of the generated picture. Comparing the old PNG format with the new WEBP format shows that the compression is lossless in both cases.

Suggestion

For our convenience, I think OpenAI could implement a client side conversion from WEBP to PNG when we click on "download" to save the picture.

this is already what it always have done, for some reason this is not working currently

That's very good to hear it's a bug and that the Webp's are lossy. This is a tough loss of functionality for me.

Eratum: I shall apologize, @nocturne hedge is correct about the lossy compression. I assumed the format used was lossless because the PNG image were identical. But in fact the only reason the PNG is identical is because it was created from the lossy webp image to begin with.

That doesn't mean the quality of dalle3 pictures dropped since the change, the compression didn't change. Instead of a lossless PNG based on a lossy WEBP, now we download the WEBP picture directly.

I still think it would be judicious to restore the client side conversion from WEBP to PNG. (I won't explain why it also makes sense in term of metadata, OpenAI engineers should understand)

they have always used webb (with clientside conversion) on systems that require them to also store the images

#

unlike the dalle API that only returns the image to your application and then the data is gone

#

this is just good practice when handling storage

I never know what you mean with those statements. When you say a lossy compression is just good practice for storing pictures, is that your 2 cents or is that from OpenAI?

I think nobody here argues about the way OpenAI should handle their storage. That's not even the topic. We're talking about the fact we lost the ability to save the pictures as PNG on client side. This is what the bug report is about and arguing about what's the best compression is not productive. Respectfully.
