#No more png

it's now in webp, not jpg. and i can't find a way to switch it back, unfortunately.
I think it's safe to assume they did this to save bandwidth. I don't have any confirmation, but it would make sense. exact same picture, almost 10x smaller.
(Left is the .webp I downloaded today. Right is the .png I downloaded in October 2023)
Dear OpenAI team, just revert. Thanks! 🙂
very disappointing! whatever the reason i hope its just bug and will be fixed soon
and we can save jpg only from app, not from browser - only webp there
Yeah, this is terrible. The .webp files are lossy, meaning lower quality, and Instagram doesn't accept .webp. This is a severe quality downgrade for paying users.
It's clearly an unannounced choice they made to save money and NOT a bug.
This statement is actually false. WEBP supports lossy compression but the format used for dalle is lossless. I tested it by comparing the PNG and WEBP version of the same dalle generated image.
I'm not a fan of this change, WEBP is objectively a better format in many aspects, but it's not as widely supported as PNG is. So it's a mildly inconvenient format to work with.
For our convenience, I think OpenAI could implement a client side conversion from WEBP to PNG when we click on "download" to save the picture.
This is so dumb. Why make a platform this large and complex with this much power and then give me absolute garbage, totally unusable output? Devs stepped in it BIG TIME.
PNGs are coming back soon
