Note on shadows: one obvious flaw in these images is the presence of shadows. It seems as though cutouts are standing up in a vertical position, which, I think, is an interesting look of its own, but not consistent with completely 2D shadow-less style of "South Park." I tried to find a work around but to no avail.

For me I had an immediate problem. What is modern? Today's modern is yesterdays retro, so it is an ever moving target.

I chose a modern cartoon that was revolutionary at the time. "Who framed Roger Rabbit" was a new art form of cartoon in the real world. Cartoons set in the real world had been done plenty, like in Mary Poppins. However, they lacked any depth. They were just a 2D cartoon in that world. With Roger Rabbit they got the best studio's to make it something else. Shadows were added, water seemed to splash onto the cartoons. Everything was rigged or changed so they seemed not just to be in the world, but actually move and interact with the world.

I requested a 3D film noir cartoon of an anthropomorphic rabbit, going through a wall into a café in the real world.

Using GPT-3.5 is always a great resource for me, especially when doing a theme that does not need current updating. It is fast and doesn’t use up prompts. It is also an excellent way to start paring down the essentials of specific animation-styles, in a form which, as was stated in a post above, you can continually use. I sought to attempt a 30s-style for a single comic.

In trying to create a Max Fleischer-style animation of the 30s, I went with a fuller description of the style using no name, or character references in the prompt. A longer one was inputted. This is how Dall-e3 rendered it: "A heartwarming scene reminiscent of the golden age of animation in the 1930s. The scene features two animated clouds with exaggerated features such as oversized eyes and expressive faces, showcasing the hand-drawn artistry of the era. Their movements are playful and rubbery, typical of the animation style of the time. Set against a dreamy backdrop of fluffy clouds and a pastel sky, one cloud is reaching out to the other with a fluffy arm, expressing genuine affection. A thought bubble with the words 'I mist you', spelled correctly, appears above, adding humor and storytelling. The overall scene is enchanting, evoking nostalgia and capturing the timeless charm of the golden age of hand-drawn animation.” These were 3 results dependent on the length that my descriptions were. More words is not always better, although it often works out that way. In this case, I went with the 2nd choice to post. I didn’t want this to be too busy. Left or right, top to bottom, based on each prompt increasing about 50% in size each prompt.

The world of 3D animation opened up new unique challenges. Some things would be insanely complicated or outright impossible to animate frame by frame for a 3D animation. It's unrealistic to expect an artist to manage millions of tiny models over thousands of frames, so physics often gets simulated, like with lighting. For example hair and fur, which can be thousands to millions of individual strands. Various details from weight, to forces acting on them, to how they interact with the light has to be calculated and in tandem with lighting is often what makes rendering animation so long.
