#My custom GPT is having problems accessing the files in its configuration?
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
I'm tired of this bug, I'm paying for this tool ! WHAT IS THE SOLUTION ???
This has been going on for some days now even when the GPT store is announced for this coming week.
So, I'm not the only one?
I'm working on some RPG/DnD GPTs and it just refuses to read the files. I don't know what to do at this point.
use CI
What kind of files are you experiencing this with? I have been unable to get it to recognize and use images that I uploaded, despite trying a number of formats. But I have uploaded PDFs under the knowledge section of Configure, and those worked. I did have problems early on uploading some PDFs that contained images, so I've been sticking to smaller text only PDFs. Maybe if you provide more details about which files work and which don't, we migth be able to narrow the problem down
Sorry, what is CI?
Oh yeah, that's on
Tell it to use CI then to read the files. Should work for now, while this bug is getting fixed
I've tried PDF, TXT, and DOCX files. They worked a couple of weeks ago. But not now
It's when I turned CI off (which is not necessary for txt and pdf) that it started working, but not for long. CI can't even process a simple CSV !
i gave up and to be able to use it, for now atleast, i gave the custom gpt the files directly. Told it "Can you access the files in the knwoledge base? NO". "Here you go these are the files, readf them!" attached the files and gave them to it. Read them and can do his job - for the moment. Obviously not the best solution but i can do my job, as long as i keep talking in the same iteration so it does not forget or i reupload the files averytime i start a new iteration.
So frustrating. Glad I checked here and didn't spend a bunch more time trying to figure out what was wrong with my PDFs.
Thanks, I turned on Code Interpreter for my GPT and that seems to have fixed the issue for now. Hopefully they'll fix this so I can turn it off again later if sharing the GPT
I think I spoke too soon, I think access to knowledge files might just be up and down at the moment 😔
if you giver the files directly to the custom gpt in the prompt it will be able to read them and use them.
Are you talking about adding it to the instructions section of the configuration or the chat with the custom GPT itself?
I put my legal disclaimer in the instruction set of my gpt so that itcan be displayed when the knowledge base it not working.
I was never able to get this to work on my Mac, but it works fine on my iPhone 🤷
No, they posted earlier about temporarily testing GPTs by giving the docs in the chat itself:
Has anyone heard from OpenAI about this issue?
It's very weird because it seems really inconsistent. Yesterday a new GPT I was working on would access knowledge files occasionally. But mostly would give the error. However older GPTs that I had created similarly (ie PDF knowledge files downloaded from Google Drive) were working fine.
I contacted support and they didn't have any specific info on this, just that it might be a glitch or something at my end.
I've sent them more info, but no further contact yet.
I'm still having issues with the same GPT today.
You can attach the files in the prompt in the chat with the custom gpt and ask it to read them
I'm having the same problem as well on my big project:

I have had made progress by using a plain text file for my knowledge instead of PDFs. This wont help anyone who wants to upload csvs though. Surely there is a large amount of people who are encountering the same problem though if this many are reporting it here, considering the 90-9-1 concept/1% rule .
Thanks for the plain text tip, I'll see if that works for me.
Hope it helps, please share your results if it does 🙏
My GPTs can sometimes read their knowledge and it is brilliant, but then the wheels come off when they can't and pretend like they still can and fill in the blanks, that filling in the blanks pretty much causes it all to fall down. I cannot imagine how the store is going to go online, with the GPTs unable to read their knowledge consistantly...
Sounds like my experience too, it took a bit of testing on my end and finding others reporting to confirm this was part of the problem. Its surprising because besides this there has been other bugs and hiccups with the GPTs configuration tool since it came out, early on when it came out I was having trouble getting it to even consistently accept more then one knowledge file without bugging out, while some others had been reporting the same in the dev forum
I have learned some things that work, but they are not consistent. I am searching for some insights to this from OpenAI, because as it stands now, I can't see how this will go forward. I have tested a lot of other people's GPTs and none that I have seen so far, can consistently aquire connection to their knowledge. If GPTs are only meant to do simple tasks that would be a shame. The customs ones that do very simple things work great though.
I don't think this is a design consideration as much as a screw-up. How many cloud services fail to connect /mnt to their users in a timely fashion? Practically none.
I just hope that they pause the opening of the store, because this will be a train wreck in none of the GPTs really work
They already paused it once, and literally everything is on fire. Support is waaaay over a week behind. If no announcement tomorrow, likely delayed a week. Not the first time.
LOL, they were going to try to rush this out in November...
It worked better in november
All of my GPTs that are above "basic" can't really work
Totally. That's because back then the shoddy /mnt connection was reliable. Now with millions of builders simultaneously trying to access the server, well, it runs like garbage.
it seemed to work at first, then I added a second txt file and upon upload it said "unable to extract text from filename.txt"
That's likely because when you tried to reconnect the /mnt for editing, it got corrupted by a time-out. It's prolific right now. You can fiddle with it by removing all knowledge and saving the GPT. Then open it back up and patiently upload each file, letting it save. Then save the GPT. If it doesn't work, open it up for editing, wait, and update it again. Usually by the final step it works. I get 75% success rate and all my GPTs I've edited this week that had this problem work now.
However, as with everything in this space, YMMV.
Thank you!
No worries and good luck
This is very helpful info and makes sense. Be careful with the new 'update' they are rolling out after I checked this box, my previously working confirmed domain wont display on my GPTs either now, ffs
I think their servers are on fire and they just rolled out more changes that are causing more issues O_O
