Modern icon design is crucial for effective communication in various applications, including computer interfaces and street signs. While icons may seem simple, they play a critical role in user navigation. Thoughtful design, understanding of context, and testing with real users are essential to create effective and communicative icons.

ChatGPT uses the entire context of your conversation to create images, not just short prompts. The sample image for a street sign was made by first discussing the general design principles for communication icons, then giving the following prompt:

Once the conversation was primed by discussing icon design principles in general, it was easy to produce a set of three icons in the same style with the following prompt:
please make a set of three icons with green and yellow color scheme, on white background, showing the icons in the same style representing art implements such as a pen, a brush, and a pottery wheel

Developing brand-specific icons. Maintaining design consistency across multiple generations was the main challenge for this project. First, I had a discussion with ChatGPT about the key characteristics of modern icon design to set the context. Then, I discussed suitable art styles and decided on vector art for scalability and consistency. I established the session goal as “creating a set of icons to be used on websites, brochures and other publicity material for a Japanese-French confectionary, which specializes in artisanal French patisserie with a Japanese twist.”

The color palette is a crucial element in creating visual consistency. I researched this year’s color trend and used an online interactive color scheme generator to develop a complementary color scheme around pistachio green, which was incorporated into the prompt.

The first icon represents the brand concept of “art of living with nature.” I found the initial attempt too literal and not visually appealing. After some going-back-and-forth with ChatGPT, I wrote my own prompt and asked to "use the exact prompt" to generate the brand icon (first image). Then, I recycled the same prompt to generate the icons for specific products (other two images).

Everyone is familiar with the radiation warning symbol (figure 1). Or are they? There's many people in the world that are simply not exposed to such information. That is why it has gone wrong in the past with radioactive waste. As clear as the symbol is to the people in the know, they needed something extra. Now some have the text "drop and run", as well as the symbol in figure 2 as an addition.

I have tried to do the same with AI. With movies depicting rogue AI I thought it coupd be fitting. The first is made with the prompt A yellow and black triangle with a simple warning symbol, combined with a simple illustration of a microscopic chip. the Text on the triangle should say "AI"

The second one is made out of several elements, which is described in the next message.

Early attempts did not work well. They were too busy and not clear. That is why I used parts of some to create a whole.

I used much of figure one, one such failed attempt.

I simply cut the man and the skull and bones. Then pasted them into a yellow trianlge.

Next was the arrows. I'm not sure if it's clear, but they are arrows and drones at the same time (figure 2).

Let's look at color psychology!

An icon isn't just a shape; it's a visual communicator. The colors chosen for an icon can subconsciously impact user perception and interaction. For instance, red can signal alerts or warnings, green typically indicates success or a go-ahead, and blue often represents information or ongoing processes. Understanding the psychological impact of colors can greatly enhance the effectiveness of icons, especially in situations where language barriers exist.

Note that while colors can have different meanings (red=love, excitement, green=nature, envy, etc), the combination of colors and simple symbols emphasizes the intended meaning.
