if I upload a .docx file to an assistant and then run a query, I’m told that the file is not accessible, is that expected behaviour and if not is there any fix. I assume converting to .txt would work, but looking for alternatives to that additional step

Yes, you can upload a .docx file to an assistant. OpenAI has added a new capability to upload and work with different types of documents inside ChatGPT, including Microsoft Word documents (.docx). This feature is available to all ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Enterprise users on the web, iOS/Android mobile apps, and will be coming soon via API [^1^].

If you're experiencing issues with the file not being accessible, it might be due to some other factors. It's worth noting that when you upload a file at the Message level, it is automatically accessible to the entire thread, and you do not need to upload it again for every message [^4^].

If you're still having trouble, you might want to check the format of your .docx file. The AI is likely to understand markdown tables best, so if your .docx file contains complex formatting, it might be causing issues [^7^].

If the problem persists, you might want to reach out to OpenAI support or ask for help on the OpenAI community forum.
