Bug Report:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open ChatGPT
2. Click the dropdown menu to switch to GPT3.5
3. Send a test message.

Expected result:

A response from GPT, usually asking how it may help me or something like that.

Actual result:

The screenshot I attached to this post. 100% of the time. No matter what browser I use, computer I use, or network I use.

Additional information

Browser: Initially tried on Chrome, tried again on Firefox and Safari. Same results.
OS: Both MacOS (Safari & Chrome) and Windows 11 (Chrome & Firefox)

I am receiving this error, but only with GPT-3.5 and only on PC. I have no problems using it on iOS.

I have tried:

• switching to a different network
• using a different browser
• using a completely different computer
• incognito mode
• clearing browsing history/cache

But this error still comes up. It has do do with my account on PC because my account on iOS works fine. I have sent a message to help.openai.com, and it suggested trying the Discord for assistance, so here I am.

I'm glad it's not just me. I'm also a Plus member, and I use 3.5 to do easy/mundane tasks while saving the more difficult ones for GPT-4.

As a temporary workaround, I am using GPT-4 for all tasks, but I reach my 40 messages/3-hours usage cap quickly this way.

and in the console i get a401 Unauthorizedand a Must use workspace account for this operation

I'm a Plus subscriber, and I can use ChatGPT 4.0 just fine, this issue seems to be only with 3.5.

I've tried:
-Multiple browsers, same issue on each
-Disabling extensions (i have none that are ai related anyhow)
-there is no VPN involved
-I've restarted my computer, and my modem/router
-cleared cahce/cookies/localstorage

Different account on the same machine works fine, which means i'm pretty sure we need someone from openai to resolve this for us.

It was a different, new, free account
This means my main account is having permission issues. There are no steps I can take to resolve this myself, I've listed and tried all the common troubleshooting steps to try, and have not resolved the issue.
Can openai dev team look at our accounts and see what the issue is?

if you suspect its account issue you can try it on a mobile browser or other computer. if it works there its your browser or computer

I'm OP. I'm a Plus user. I have GPT-4. I used Firefox, Chrome and Safari, as indicated in my original post. Only GPT-4 currently works for me. Plugins also work. GPT-3.5 is the only one that doesn't work.

As a workaround, I'm currently using Bing for my GPT 3.5 tasks.

I'm pretty sure is not a machine issue. It's not fun to be sent through the same troubleshooting steps when Ive already confirmed its an account issue, not a device issue.

As indicated in the original post, I checked on iOS. The mobile app works fine for both 3.5 and 4.0. However, the PC version does not work for me at all when attempting to use 3.5.

You chould check your browser's console logs/errors. To confirm we all have the same issue, you can look for
401 Unautorized and Must use workspace account for this operation
(Open safari console via Option + ⌘ + C , or if on chrome, F12 and switch to console tab)

As mentioned earlier, it can take 1-2 weeks for them to resolve this issue, so in the meantime, Discord is all we have.

It's probably not all that useful but I am also having this exact same issue, started about 2 days ago. Plus user and have tried multiple computers, browsers and some of my computers don't even have a VPN client installed so it's not that. Hopefully, this gets resolved soon.

Mine started on Dec 16. "Our systems have detected unusual activity from your system. Please try again later." GPT 3.5 does not work, GPT 4 works.

No VPN. No plugins. Tried different browsers. The only thing that works is the iOS app. I even tried using the mobile browsers and that doesn't work either, it shows the same message.

EDIT: It actually doesn't work on iOS as intended. Other commenters said it switches to GPT 4 even if you selected GPT 3.5, and that's exactly what's happening with me. So GPT 3.5 is completely broken

I should also note that on the left side, the names of every new chat is just "New chat". It no longer does the naming for me.

I had the same experience as Joe. Even though you think your ios app is using 3.5, you get auto-switched to 4.0 for every message. Ask the model and it will tell you this too.
This is, without a doubt, an issue on OpenAI's side with our accounts.

These responses from OpenAI are just typical "troubleshooting steps" and are not a response to the content of our issue (since if they read our actual issue they'd know we ruled out all those already).

We need to be clear in our responses that this issue is on their end, and it is not due to our network/device/settings/environment.

When I first got the error I thought maybe GPT3.5 was down since I can still use GPT4 no problem (other than chats no longer being named automatically). My other account was made months ago with a different email when I was showing my coworkers how to sign up. I never upgraded it to Plus too. But I logged back in and I no longer got the "unusual activity" error. I take that to mean it's a problem on the server side since I was using the same device, browser, etc. just with different accounts.

You can send them a message via the chatbot at help.openai.com. They got back to me in ~2 hours with kinda generic suggestions (turn off browser extensions, clear cookies/cache, etc) which didn’t resolve the issue. I sent them a reply this morning to that effect and haven’t heard back yet. Maybe if more of us raise the issue with the support team it’ll get prioritized sooner?

Another thing I just found under another bug chat group here (GPT 3.5 DOES NOT WORK!): someone recommended to remove 4.0 plugins as they may be messing with chatgpt3.5. I tried to do this but had no plugins installed. So i activated the toggle button for plugins, then 3.5 started working. Probably pure coincidence. I turned off the plugins option and it still works. hopefully it stays that way

I misunderstood and thought you meant to " tweak" adjust settings, as we can directly modify our existing GPT account. The problem we're experiencing is account-specific. Creating a new account resolves the issue, and 3.5 works flawlessly without any problems.

I know for a fact that this issue is account related on the servers side, because if you just cerate a new free account on the same browser, without changing anything, it works
