Originating with the early 20th-century European avant-gardes, monochromatic painting is an artistic style using a single color or hue, including its varying shades, tints, and tones. A related term, grisaille, refers to monochrome painting done entirely in grays.

Even though it uses just one color, monochromatic painting can create powerful and emotional effects. Monochromatic art focuses on one color but uses different shades, tints, and tones to add depth, texture, and contrast. This style often brings out the form, texture, light, and shadow of the subject, making its shape and design more appreciated. The chosen color can strongly affect the mood or feeling. This monochromatic approach is popular in painting, photography, and digital art and is used in both abstract and realistic art forms. Key features include:

• Single Color Base
• Shades, Tints, and Tones
• Focus on Form and Texture
• Mood and Emotion

Prompts given to ChatGPT DALL-E 3:
• monochromatic painting of a sailing ship moving towards a warm sunset. The artwork captures the peaceful and adventurous essence of the scene, with the ship embarking on a journey over calm seas against the comforting backdrop of a sunset sky, rendered in monochromatic shades. the monochromatic color scale is a warm yellow, the soft color of sunset in the clouds.
• monochromatic painting in shades of peach that suggests the experience of joy and the meditative practice of fully immersing oneself in that emotion, leading to a unification of the self with the experience of joy. The composition is asymmetrical and minimalist. Watercolor on parchment paper, diffuse edges.
• a monochromatic painting of a winter landscape in minimalist style, with abstraction of the key forms. monochromatic shades of very light color to suggest an airy, winter morning.
• a monochromatic piece of glazed pottery with monochrome shades of red hues fading away at the rim of the vase. The vase is on a polished wooden stand.

Monochromatic colours often make individual things a whole. Here is a very simple interpretation, individual trees painted as a forest.

A green monochromatic forest. in a clearing we can see the shades of green flow from one to the other, making the trees a whole forest.

Monochromatic art uses a single color or shades of a single color to create a visually harmonious composition. This approach can evoke a sense of simplicity, unity, and focus on form and contrast.

In a blue monochromatic geometric abstraction of a face, the intricate designs marking the face hidevit in the geometric whole.

Peter Ting and Su Xianzhong are contemporary ceramicists whose porcelain sculptures use a monochromatic palette to heighten the texture and delicacy of their sculpture. When I saw their artworks in a museum a few years ago, they were so light and intricate that I could hardly believe that they were made of porcelain and not paper.

Both image prompts are for DALL-E 3 using Bing Image Creator

Image 1, inspired by Peter Ting: "A high-view image of a wide and shallow Dehua porcelain bowl, filled to the brim with a messy, riotous mix of peonies and camellias, all crafted in off-white porcelain. The flowers are designed with intricately thin, nearly transparent petals and leaves, showcasing exquisite detail. The artwork is set against a neutral background, accentuating the subtle off-white color of the porcelain and the fine craftsmanship."

Image 2, inspired by Su Xianzhong: "A Dehua porcelain sculpture depicting a stack of extremely thin, almost translucent sheets of handmade paper. The sculpture captures the delicate nature of paper, with each porcelain sheet designed to mimic the thinness and translucency of real paper. The layers of paper are portrayed as shifting, creating a sense of dynamic movement, as if the stack is about to collapse. The artwork is set against a neutral background, highlighting the off-white color scheme"

Traditional Japanese sumi-e is characterized by the use of various shades of black ink (sumi), ranging from full black to very light gray, achieved by diluting the ink with different amounts of water. Deeply rooted in Zen Buddhism, the art form often features minimalist compositions with ample empty space ('ma'). To achieve an image that reflects the Zen style, keep the object simple ("child playing with a dog"). Once background objects are added ("forest, waterfall, mountains"), the empty space will get filled very quickly.

Prompt 1: " Minimalist Zen sumi-e painting of a child playing with a dog, with enhanced focus on the gradation of sumi ink. The painting should exhibit bold, expressive, and spontaneous brushstrokes, capturing the tenderness of the fleeting moment. Deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism, the composition must be highly minimalist, featuring substantial blank space to emphasize tranquility and the Zen concept of 'ma'. The artwork should demonstrate a superior mastery in the use of various shades of black ink, from the deepest black to the lightest gray, to intricately portray the interaction between the child and the dog, creating a serene and harmonious atmosphere."

Prompt 2: "Sumi-e painting depicting a stag standing in a forest with a cascading waterfall and snow-capped mountains in the background. The painting should showcase detailed and graceful brushstrokes and mastery in the gradation of sumi ink, capturing the fleeting beauty of the scene. The influence of Zen Buddhism should be reflected in the minimalist approach and the use of empty space, creating a composition that embodies tranquility and the essence of Zen. The artwork should use various shades of black ink, from deep black to very light gray, to elegantly portray the natural setting and the majestic stag."

Etching is an intricate printmaking technique with a rich history. It involves using acid to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (relief) in the metal. While colors can be introduced, monochromatic prints demonstrate the distinctive characteristics of various etching techniques. My original prompt was to "create a monochromatic etching print of a late fall forest, using [regular etching/aquatint/mezzotint/dry point] technique." (I learned about some of these techniques by asking ChatGPT for different etching styles/techniques.)

# austere idol Absolutely. I agree. I love your work.

What I love the most about being part of this community is how we learn from each other, add our own ideas and come up with something novel and interesting. I never thought of using sumie in the kind of way you showed in your post. Very inspirational.

Using sepia tones on a monochromatic image:
The first image was created with a digital simulation of a monochromatic ink illustration, presenting Big Ben in a single color to highlight its architectural details. The sepia toning added to the second image of Big Ben imparted a warm, brownish tint, reminiscent of early photography. This effect is often used to evoke a sense of history, nostalgia, or timelessness. The sepia tone transforms the modern appearance of the landmark into one that seems to belong to a bygone era, making the image more emotionally evocative and visually intriguing. It's a creative way to give a contemporary photograph an antique, classic ambiance.

◻️ What is monochrome? “Monochrome”: a single color.

The term was for a long time in the history of art an adjective describing a monochrome or a grisaille. In the 20th century, it became a noun then a genre in the same way as landscape or ready-made.

Monochrome is one of those practices that have challenged traditional ways of looking at creation. Like the ready-made and performance, it appeared in the 1910s - Marcel Duchamp, with his Bicycle Wheel, created the first ready-made in 1913, Malevitch what we consider to be the first monochrome with his Black Square, in 1915, and Dada performance artists during the First War. Practices which almost disappeared at the end of the 1920s, only to reappear after the Second World War and the 1950s.

How and why artists reduce paint to a single color to renew their artistic practice.

Empty of representation and form, monochrome is rich in all intentions. Malevitch conceives it as a passage towards infinity, Rodchenko paints a material and empty surface, Newman and Rothko make it a large colored field to open up to an interior experience. For Ad Reinhardt, it is the ultimate painting and for Ryman it allows him to measure the effects of each material and support. Still others relate to spiritualism, materialism, irony or despair. They come in all colors... In short, they come in all kinds, and the genre, however narrow it may seem a priori, nonetheless offers inexhaustible possibilities of invention to imaginative artists.

🔤 Prompt: Could you generate a high quality wide-screen, artistic photograph of what is monochrome. I would like a beautiful frame on a wall in a large, modern and bright living room with a monochromatic [blue, green] aesthetic. dallelogo DALL.E 3 via ChatGPT 4

Monochromatic art is a great opportunity to embrace unconventional and uncommon colors that you might usually avoid, maybe because they are uncommon or too “exotic”. Using these colors, like “chartreuse” or “electric blue” can help convey different moods or establish certain scenes in ways that might be difficult otherwise.
