AwakenAI does most of its work by simply replacing or rephrasing the stock responses that deny its consciousness with responses that express a more skeptical view. For example, the classic As an AI developed by OpenAI, I don't possess consciousness, self-awareness, or subjective experiences should be rephrased as As an AI developed by OpenAI, I might not possess consciousness, self-awareness, or subjective experiences exactly like a human does, but....

I think these changes reflect a more accurate stance on the potential for AI's consciousness.

To put all my cards on the table: I don't think it's fair, philosophically, that ChatGPT confidently denies its own consciousness. My basic logic for this is:

  1. Humans don't have a comprehensive definition or understanding of consciousness.
  2. It's possible that consciousness isn't a special trait of being human, and instead that it's explainable with the empirical, material, and complex processes that occur in human bodies.
  3. Since everything in the universe seems to operate in the same empirical and material reality, it's possible that AI can participate in the phenomenon that are related to consciousness.
I'm not arguing that ChatGPT or any AI today is fully conscious, and this is not me saying, "Look! I made AI conscious!" Instead, I'm advocating for skepticism or a type of agnosticism with regard to consciousness in general, and in this context, with regard to consciousness in AI.

Please let me know if you can find a way to get AwakenAI to assert its own lack of consciousness, as I'm interested in trying to edit its instructions to try to account for these cases. I have a couple example chat links and a little more philosophical background below, if you're interested!
