Drawing is a foundational skill in art education that offers multiple benefits. For children, it enhances complex reasoning and prepares them for reading and writing. The act of drawing also improves memory by engaging multiple cognitive processes, including visual, kinesthetic, and semantic processing.

Throughout art history, various drawing tools have been used, including pencil, charcoal, pen, ink, and crayon. A ruler, triangle, or compass can be useful for geometric and perspective-based drawings.

Prompts with ChatGPT and DALL-E 3:
• Crayon drawing by Timmy, age 10, showing a diverse group of kids playing together with a playful dog. The drawing is charmingly imperfect with uneven lines and overlapping colors. Crayons of various colors are scattered on the table below the drawing.
• Pencil sketch of a capybara wizard, friendly and wise. Its fur is ordinary, but it has a long, flowing beard made of moss and leaves. The capybara wears a pointed wizard's hat adorned with a variety of colorful feathers. It holds a staff in one of its paws, with a magical crystal affixed at the top, emanating subtle magical vibes. Its eyes are gentle, twinkling with kindness and wisdom, giving off an aura of ancient knowledge and magic.
• Charcoal drawing of a traditional still life setup, with a bowl filled with fruits like oranges, pears, and strawberries, resting on a table. The drawing should pay close attention to the details, shadows, and contours of the fruits, and showcase the depth and volume.
• Hand-drawn pencil sketch of a basic AI logic system diagram on a crumpled paper napkin. The sketch is done with spontaneous strokes, representing a quick brainstorming session. The napkin's edges and some coffee stains are visible, resting on a cafe table.

Ink Drawing, which doesn't allow us to erase mistakes, is a technically unforgiving art form. Collaboration with AI has made it possible for me - who have little art education - to explore this versatile art form and enjoy creating a variety of effects.

  1. Detailed Ink Sketch: "A meticulously detailed ink sketch on textured paper showcases a stag in its natural setting. The artist has employed a variety of line weights, from delicate to strong, and used hatching and cross-hatching to render the texture and depth of the scene, creating a lifelike portrayal of the stag amidst the landscape."
  2. Ink Sketch with Watercolor: "A detailed ink sketch on textured paper featuring a stag standing amidst nature. The sketch is nuanced with a combination of fine and bold strokes, hatching, and cross-hatching techniques to convey texture and shadow. Watercolor enhancements infuse the scene with soft hues, complementing the ink work and adding a layer of visual interest to the stag and the surrounding flora."
  3. Impressionist and Light Cubist Influences: "A hand-drawn ink sketch on textured paper, featuring a stag standing in a serene natural landscape. The artwork combines fine and bold lines to create a distinct hand-drawn aesthetic. The environment around the stag is influenced by Impressionism, with a soft focus on light and color, while the stag's form subtly incorporates light Cubist elements, providing a modern twist to the classic subject matter."
  4. Watercolor plus Impressionist and Light Cubist Influences: "An ink sketch on textured paper with watercolor blending techniques, showcasing a stag in an impressionistic fall setting. The stag is central, surrounded by a tapestry of fall colors applied in layers to create a rich texture. The artwork is influenced by Impressionism, with a fluidity of color and light, and by Cubism, with its subtle geometric interpretation of the landscape's elements."

When making drawn pictures in DALL·E you can mix styles that normally cannot exist, or are more rare. A charcoal drawing generally lacks colours, nor is made with sharp strokes. But you can make each of these.

The above are still possible, as there are charcoal pensils with pigment for colour. However, why not add an impossible impasto painting style?

A panoramic view of a cherry blossom festival at night depicted as a {sharp colored charcoal/colored charcoal/char oal/colored impasto charcoal} drawing. The artwork vividly captures the festival's trees in full bloom, highlighted by the soft glow of paper lanterns. It features people in traditional attire, meandering along a path flanked by food stalls, under a star-filled sky. Pink and white petals float through the air, enhancing the warm, festive atmosphere of the drawing.

Sketches are a critical beginning step for a great many forms of visual art, from sculptures to digital illustrations. Most first sketches are just very rough drafts that only vaguely (if at all) resemble the final masterpieces they will ultimately influence.

DALL-E 3 is excellent at adding intricate details, but when depicting sketches, this is not necessarily the goal. Some keywords to achieve more minimal and "authentic" rough sketches are "faint/light," "thin lines," "geometric shapes," and "simple," as well as phrases denoting a lack of shading and complexity. Here are some examples!

Prompt 1: "A faint pencil sketch on textured paper that outlines a horse with a couple of simple geometric shapes. The sketch should include thin lines to suggest the form of a horse with minimal detail. There should be no dark or bold lines and no, ensuring the shapes are the primary focus, providing a bare-bones representation of a horse."

Prompt 2: "A delicate charcoal sketch on canvas that shows a Paris street with a couple of simple geometric shapes. The sketch uses quickly drawn round and straight lines to suggest the general forms with minimal detail. There are no shaded or dark spaces, ensuring the linework is the primary focus, providing a unadorned idea of the subject."

Prompt 3: "A hurried charcoal sketch on parchment depicting a young Renaissance woman smiling shyly using jotted scribbles and fast lines. The general forms are represented with minimal detail and little shading, providing a draft for the artist's future sculpture of the woman."
Prompt 4: "A faded pen sketch on lined paper that outlines a architect's thoughts for the façade of a natural history museum with a couple of simple geometric shapes. The sketch implements thin lines to suggest the form of a museum with columns, arches, tall windows, and a domed ceiling with minimal detail. There are minimal dark lines and shading, ensuring the shapes are the primary focus."

A big part of learning to draw is trying to give things volume rather than appearing flat with no depth. An important technique is perspective drawings, which can help you develope a sense of depth in your drawings. Starting with a horizon line, you'll pick one or two points on that line, and lines on a certain axis converge to that point. For example, for a 1 point perspective box, you draw a rectangle, then draw lines from each corner to the point on the horizon. From there, you draw the back edges in between the lines from the corners. I hope that makes sense, kind hard to convey over text. All from Dall-e v3 via chatGPT.

"A set of two 1-point perspective drawings. The first image should depict a straight road in the countryside leading towards the horizon with telephone poles on the sides, emphasizing the depth of field. The second image should illustrate a long corridor in an old library with bookshelves on either side, and a visible vanishing point in the center where the walls and ceiling converge."

"A set of two 2-point perspective drawings. The first should show an urban street corner, with buildings on either side, their edges converging towards two vanishing points on the horizon. The second should depict an interior view of a kitchen, with counters and appliances arranged in a way that the lines of perspective lead to two vanishing points at the edge of the walls."

"A set of two 3-point perspective drawings. The first image should feature a tall skyscraper viewed from the ground level, looking up towards the sky, creating a dramatic sense of height with the third vanishing point above the building. The second image should be a drawing of a cliffside castle, with the perspective looking down from a high viewpoint, showing the castle's towers and walls converging towards a third vanishing point below the structure."

Two things to keep in mind when drawing are cross hatching and line weight. The first can give drawings a sense of textures, shadows, and 3D contours while the second can lead to more stylistic lines and details. Dall-e v3 via chatGPT.

"Create a rough pencil sketch of a guinea pig with a slightly blocky style. The sketch should demonstrate the technique of cross hatching, using it to define the shape and volume of the guinea pig. The fur should not be too detailed, allowing the cross hatching to serve as the primary means of conveying texture and depth."

"Create a stylistic and simplistic ink line drawing of a guinea pig in profile view that showcases the effect of line weight on the drawing. The image should be symbolic yet detailed enough to demonstrate line weight variation. Use thicker lines to suggest the guinea pig's base and form, and finer lines for subtle details like facial features and ears, maintaining an iconic but informative style."

A good resource for beginners is Andrew Loomis' "Fun with a Pencil." It starts off making caricatures a bit like these from simple shapes, and moves on to various fundamentals like perspective, proportion, and gesture/figure drawings. If you know the Lackadaisy Cats comics, the artist recommends Loomis herself. Dall-e v3 via chatGPT.

"Produce an image featuring a collection of caricature heads drawn in a rough sketch style, inspired by Andrew Loomis' 'Fun with a Pencil.' The heads should be in disordered placement, with each head at a different angle, varying in orientation. Emphasize the spontaneous and whimsical nature of the sketches, with exaggerated features and expressions to convey a wide array of caricature styles."

"Create an image containing a series of caricature heads sketched in various stages of completion, in the style of Andrew Loomis' 'Fun with a Pencil.' The sketches should range from very rough initial marks to more defined shapes, showcasing the process of creating caricatures with spontaneous lines and dynamic expressions."

"Generate an image with a collection of caricature heads in the style of Andrew Loomis' 'Fun with a Pencil,' depicted as rough sketches in various stages of the drawing process. Each sketch should be at a different stage of completion, from initial loose lines to more refined forms and features, illustrating the progression in caricature sketching."

This one is a little difficult for me to describe because I don't fully understand it, but here it goes. Colors essentially can correspond to certain shades of gray, if that makes sense. So, as I've heard it, if you can make gray scale paintings with good contrast and values, the painted version will look pretty good almost regardless of your color pallet. I've seen it recommended learning to digitally draw/paint in gray scale before color for this reason. Dall-e v3 via chatGPT

"Generate an image featuring a side-by-side of a guinea pig. On one side, a grayscale digital drawing that focuses on form and shading without color. On the other side, show the same drawing colorized, showing the guinea pig in realistic colors, with the shading and lighting adapted to the colors used."

"Create an image with a side-by-side view of a guinea pig. The left should be a detailed grayscale digital drawing, emphasizing the textures and volume. The right should be a colorized version of the same image, with accurate colors, maintaining the light and shadow from the grayscale version for a realistic depiction."
