That said, the gpt is not a source for truth.

That is probably because it’s not having any real “word counter” tool inbuilt, not sure.
To write blogposts with a certain amount of words you can ask it to elaborate on some sections.
As otherwise for a large amount of word (precise to the dot) it isn’t adequate.
What’s the use case here?
you need to understand that it can not count in a traditional sense. Language models are bad at math. When you tell it "600 words" it will output something that **roughly ** matches that length. It will never count the actual individual words in a long text, at least not in a traditional sense.
Also it's worth pointing out that most outputs are limited to 1.2-1.5k tokens max for GPT4.
