I feel the previous ink wash was better. The pictures didn't fill the page, which was part of the charm.

I agree 100%.
These ones still have their charms, but it doesn't capture the style I loved in the older models.

Before, I could use gemstones as color cues, but I've noticed that oftentimes they're now incorporated as literal crystals inside the image. It doesn't bother me too much here, but there are times when I don't want that distraction in the generation
