#Deadname appearing in ChatGPT app

My name is supposed to appear above my messages, but it’s using the wrong one. I changed my name to Sara on my account a while ago, then it was still showing up elsewhere on the site so I had support fix it. Now it’s appearing here? Why is that name still in my account at all? It shows up correctly in the browser version of ChatGPT.

I just installed the app for the first time yesterday.

#

I don’t think the app even existed back when I changed the name on my account.

I'll help look into this. I'm very sorry about the trouble.

Alright; thanks for your assistance. I did just update the app but it didn’t resolve the issue unfortunately. I understand glitches sometimes occur, so I’m not offended by it or anything.

Hi @timid bough
We have prioritized this fix, but it will take a little bit longer. Hoping this will be all fixed up soon.

Alright; I understand. Thanks for prioritizing it!

I just noticed my deadname started appearing on the web version as well. However, I was able to correct it from the user settings page on the API site, and now it shows up correctly in the app as well. Good work! 👍

#

Thanks for the fix.

happening to me as well (specifically, the name in the custom GPTs community builder name). not sure why y'all decided to use billing details and not account name. not a cool move at all, but if y'all are willing to change that it'd make a huge difference. idk how this even got thru review....

#

especially since it's something meant to be shared and not an internal name.

I'll raise this to the team. Thank you for flagging.

I agree that it shouldn't use billing details. You already have a place for users to put their preferred name, so there's no reason to pull it from anywhere else. Billing info generally requires you to use your legal name, which isn't easy to change, and even if someone likes their legal name, they might prefer to use a pseudonym for privacy reasons. So that's IMO a terrible place to pull it from, unless there's some legal reason why that name needs to be used, and I can't imagine what that reason would be.

#

If it's about preventing impersonation, the solution is to have a verification system, like what the blue check used to mean on Twitter before Elon took over.

Ya I think the idea is to Publish publicly you need to verify something. You don't have to use billing details but it is one option.

I'll be pushing on the team to atleast make sure these aren't in your face if you don't opt into them. I'm hoping to make this better for ya'll.

Why is it so important that users have some sort of verified identity just to post publicly?

#

I'm curious about that

it's a product decision, has to do with the GPT Store

# covert ridge Ya I think the idea is to Publish publicly you need to verify something. You don...

if you're going to change something, then allow us to put our actual name in to be displayed publically. If you're really that much more concerned about impersonation than inclusion, then you can include a unique username identifier that people can use to double-check. But forcing legal name use for verification reasons is enough to make me want to never publish gpts, since I can't do it under my name.

#

would also love to have a timeline for when I'll be able to actually publish gpts in my name

There will be some other options coming soon. I can't give any timelines, I'm sorry. Trying to help represent your voice and concerns to the team as best I can.
