I've been trying and trying to use Japanese art styles like ukiyoe and byobu-e, which worked amazingly well on Bing/DE2 and DE3. But I can't get anywhere with DE3Alpha. Here's one example. I used the identical prompt and there are the results from Bing v. Alpha. Prompt: "Japanese byobu-e painting, Kano School style, a white and a black swans in a tranquil lake, surrounded by trees in fall colors, exquisite details, subtle colors, gold foil background."

I agree it struggles with those styles as well as watercolor and any brush stroke the requires some subtle shading. Everything looks like digital art due to a strong aesthetic bias for oversaturated colors and sharp edge definition.
Yes! Do you mind sharing how you achieved that look?
Yes, I noticed that, too. I'm glad it wasn't just me. ๐
Kano School style Japanese byobu-e art on aged gold paper. A tableau presents a white swan and a black swan gliding on a calm lake, with trees bearing autumn leaves framing the scene. The painting is notable for its detailed craftsmanship, muted color palette, and the shimmering gold foil that forms the canvas.
Was the promt, the key trick is to tell it to make it on worn/aged or something like that paper. It works wonder with anything that should not look to digital
I am fighting the new model to achiev more painterly/handdrawn/impressionistic stuff since I got acess. Love the new Model, the quality is astounding, the details are great. But for this "classic" art its tricky.
@vital shoal
Thank you for your advice! I got used to Bing/Dall.e filling in these details. I'll definitely try your techniques.
best of luck ๐
And I would love to see your results if you like to share ๐
This is what I got so far - huge improvement! "Portrait orientation, Japanese byobu-e painting, Kano School style, on vintage gold foil paper, a crane flies upward toward the moon, whispy clouds floating around the moon, delicate brushstrokes produce subtle and nuanced image with ethereal feel, subtle colors of natural pigments, gold foil background"
very nice!
depending on what your aming for telling it that something should evoke a hand drawn look can also help
Okay, ty!
@vital shoal I hope you do not mind me intruding. I also gave a try
I have no idea whether that is authentic though ๐
Thank you for joining me! I'm happy to find more people interested in Japanese art.
Walking down the memory lane to the early days of DE3, I was reminded how important discussions with peers have been to my exploration of AI gen art.
Here's what I generated today from a similar prompt, using a custom GPT for water-based art: "A Japanese byobu-e painting in the Kano School style, created on aged gold paper. The artwork presents a tableau with a white swan and a black swan gliding on a calm lake. The scene is framed by trees bearing autumn leaves. This painting stands out for its detailed craftsmanship, featuring a muted color palette and the shimmering gold foil that forms the canvas. The style is ephemeral and ethereal, characterized by delicate brushstrokes and a minimalist, asymmetrical composition. The artwork combines a sense of timeless beauty with a subtle, understated elegance."
DE3 - Experimenting with Japanese Art Styles
My thinking on "Japanese art" evolved and broadened over time, using, for examle, traditional Nihonga technique to depict a modern scene.
Mixing Japanese art styles like Nihonga and Ukiyo-e with Western art styles often creates a unique look. THis image is a blemding of Ukiyo-e and Art Nouveau, with a touch of lyrical abstraction.
