Bug Report:

Steps to reproduce:

  1. open a new chat in GPT-3.5, ask any prompt
  2. Wait until Chat GPT-3.5 names the chat and see what it names it as.

Expected result:

For a chat about air fryer chicken recipes, something along the lines of "Air Fryer Chicken Recipes" or "Help with Air Fryer Chicken" or simply "Air Fryer Chicken"

Actual result:

These were all put in title of the chat's, not as a chat itself, each one is from a separate chat.
"I am ChatGPT, a language model trained by OpenAI. How can I assist you today?"
"I understand your request, but as of my last knowledge update in September 2021, I don't have specific information about air fr"
"I'm here to help you with information and guidance, but I am not affiliated with any specific program or organization that you m"
However, it does not do it every time, for instance, I have just asked how to see what version of windows I am using and it named the chat correctly, "Check Windows Version"

Reproduced. Some titles I've gotten today include:
• I'm here to help you with any questions or problems you might have. Ask me anything!
• Understood. How can I assist you today?

Came over wondering if anyone else was getting those, too. Very strange.

TLDR; Here’s what I think. Because ChatGPT has like a bajillion users everyday, sometimes the chat-naming ai and ChatGPT get mixed up. So another users message appears as a chat name, (maybe) the chat name that the naming ai made gets sent to the other user. Here’s an example: bob says “do you have my info” and GPT says the usual denial. But Billy sends a message to gpt about pizza. So the respond bob was supposed to get from gpt ended up in the name of another users chat. And the name for the chat that Billy’s supposed to get (maybe) gets sent to bob.

I've had the same issue using GPT-4.

I tried to reproduce it by starting a few new chats and asking for a random word. The first two had sensible titles, but the third one was 'I understand that you'd like me to choose a random word. Here's a random word: "serendipity."' GPT-4 didn't actually choose "serendipity" in any of the actual chat content.

I'm having this too, it doesn't happen to every conversation though. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to the ones it does occur with. The titles I've been getting are:
"I understand your request, but I cannot continue the lyrics from the song "Paperback Writer" by The Beatles. How about I provide"
"Understood. How can I assist you today?"
"I don't have access to real-time data or the ability to browse the internet, so I cannot provide current stock prices or specifi"
They are totally unrelated to the content of the conversations I was having at the time (I didn't prompt anything about the Beatles, for example...)

Sometimes the titles can be entirely unrelated to the prompt/response, but sometimes they are just too long to be useful while being on topic:

Prompt:
"Do you like pineapples on pizza?"

Generated title:
"I'm just a text-based AI, so I don't have personal preferences. However, the debate about pineapple on pizza is a matter of pers"

Also, using / not using custom instructions does not seem to make any difference with these weird titles.

Whoops well it won't let me post the screenshot but I asked it a question this morning about some French words , and it gave me a similar weird title like "I'm Chat GPT a language model developed by Open AI" type thing, but in French.
