#Inconsistent and Intrusive Captcha Behaviour

There are a few bug reports which are more specific, but I feel this title better captures the overall issue. I will attempt to capture information from related bug reports in here. See below for a comment linking to all the related bug reports I was able to find.

Steps to preproduce:

  1. Login to an account on Chat GPT
  2. Use Chat GPT for a little while
  3. The issue may or may not occur. It's unpredictable and stochastic
  4. A proxy or vpn is NOT required to reproduce the issue. This happens under normal network conditions.

Expected result:

Chat GPT answers the prompt without interruption

Actual result:

A blinding white light appears. We are now solving a puzzle to prove that we're human instead of talking to Chat GPT. Sometimes we have to solve 5 puzzles in a row between every single prompt. It's possible that not every computer on the same network is affected.

Additional Information

  • captchas are displayed during normal use while logged in
  • during a period of time, usually several hours, a captcha occurs for every prompt
  • other computers on the same network may or may not have the same issue
  • one time after this occurred, Chat GPT became unreachable, then displayed a gateway error, then came back online with the issue resolved.

Why I think this is a bug

  • The transition from Chat GPT's dark theme to the white background is very uncomfortable; it wasn't designed like something the user is supposed to see all the time.
  • It interferes with normal use for logged in users.
  • It's not a sly way to reduce traffic on Chat GPT because nobody would treat users like that. Instead, it must be a bug; if Open AI wanted to reduce traffic from Chat GPT users, surely they would be transparent about it and show us a timer between prompts instead.

Thanks for collating all the reports! This has been happening to me today too. I was able to go 10-11 conversation turns before this started happening, and now it's happening on every message as of the last 3-4 messages. I'm a Pro user using Advanced Data Analysis / previously Code Interpreter. Using it through the regular chat.openai.com web interface, and I don't feel like I've done anything particularly wacky other than toggle the Chrome developer tools a couple times.

As a user: I did feel pretty dumb when I still didn't understand how to do the "train" version of the captcha after a few attempts. 😂 I just refreshed the page to see if it would go away. It didn't, but all the captchas became the object-identification ones, which I find more intuitive. Either way, it takes like 15 seconds to fully complete one of these captchas, which is pretty annoying.

I also had this problem. Before tonight, I'd only seen a handful of captchas using ChatGPT, and that's with heavy daily usage since November of last year. A couple of hours ago, I sent a message on a lengthy Advanced Data Analysis thread and I was captcha-walled. And then another one on the very next message. It persisted on every message I sent, through refreshes, re-authentication, privacy mode, and an alternate browser.

I finally escaped captcha-land by starting a non-analysis convo, then starting another new analysis thread. Unfortunately, I was entrenched in context with my previous thread, so I spent the last two hours convincing a website every three minutes or so that I was, in fact, not a robot so I that could message a robot 😖

The train startled me for a moment. I really worry about when software is better at captchas all around; how do we distinguish between robots and humans after that? We'll either accidentally make our systems ableist (as we perhaps already have, given I've already seen accessibility complaints about these captchas), or an authenticated identity that's only possible for a human to get and any human can only have one, which has other concerning implications.

FYI to everybody here, there's an X in the top right of the page and I recently just xed out of the captcha without having to complete it (I've completed it multiple times in the past hour or two though, so it may let you just exit it if it verified recently)

yeah I"ve x'd out but it just increases the amount next time.

it was happening to me a few weeks ago, and now it's happening to me all over again with a new set of puzzles on every single request. whether it's in a new conversation or one I'm already having. I think I remember hearing they were targeting linux users more with it in the other thread I was involved with, but I don't remember how I resolved it last time and got to keep working without spending 2 minutes solving capchas for every single response

#

I can understand users are upset, it's absolutely infuriating to get smacked with the captcha over and over.

I get a captcha on all chromium based browsers no matter if incognito/private window, or existing session. everything is working in firefox though for now, so I'll use that as a workaround 🤦‍♀️

I am facing the same issue using Chrome. If I move to Firefox it works fine.

Whenever I experience this issue several other people are experiencing it at the same time. Then we have gaps of time where it appears to be fixed.

I am a plus subscriber with this issue today for first time I am using firefox lol

the problem was gone for a week without doing anything, and then i installed a Chrome extension for some chatGPT stuff, and the issue reappears again ( i contacted the Open AI team )

#

is there a solution for this problem?

#

so much time consuming , I have to pass 5 tests each time I submit a prompt and I spent more time on the captcha rather then the prompt itself ( not even an easy puzzle ) I had previously reached out to OpenAI support when i got the issues for the first time and the answer was :

1. Try clearing your browser's cache and cookies
2. Disable VPN (If you are using one)
3. Use an incognito browser or a different internet browser/computer to see if the issue still persists, as a security add-in or extension can occasionally cause this type of error.
4. Disable cookie blockers
5. Try connecting to another network

already tried everything suggested in their responses and there's no change

Hello everyone, I used a strategy from @fair tusk that has previously proven effective , You just closed your browser and messed with your computer's time. When you reload GPT, you will find that the puzzle has reappeared. Close GPT and restore the time, then reopen GPT again, and the puzzle will disappears. And the problem is finally resolved.
A huge thanks to @fair tusk

Please find a way to fix this. It's driving me absolutely insane, and I'm about ready to cancel my paid subscription.

Captcha again.

Can you guys please try clearing your browsing information (cache + cookies), if dosen't work, try onh firefox, if dosen't work try on firefox incognito, if dosen't work all steps on mobile data / change network? Then say when it worked and where t didn't`? This could help understanding if the captchas are directed to your network or your account.

Also (but I guess you know this) disable any vpn / adblocker / intrusive extension and disable avast internet security, it can sometimes interfere.

can you please check again? If it is the case, then you should contact openai.
