There are a few bug reports which are more specific, but I feel this title better captures the overall issue. I will attempt to capture information from related bug reports in here. See below for a comment linking to all the related bug reports I was able to find.
Steps to preproduce:
- Login to an account on Chat GPT
- Use Chat GPT for a little while
- The issue may or may not occur. It's unpredictable and stochastic
- A proxy or vpn is NOT required to reproduce the issue. This happens under normal network conditions.
Expected result:
Chat GPT answers the prompt without interruption
Actual result:
A blinding white light appears. We are now solving a puzzle to prove that we're human instead of talking to Chat GPT. Sometimes we have to solve 5 puzzles in a row between every single prompt. It's possible that not every computer on the same network is affected.
Additional Information
- captchas are displayed during normal use while logged in
- during a period of time, usually several hours, a captcha occurs for every prompt
- other computers on the same network may or may not have the same issue
- one time after this occurred, Chat GPT became unreachable, then displayed a gateway error, then came back online with the issue resolved.
Why I think this is a bug
- The transition from Chat GPT's dark theme to the white background is very uncomfortable; it wasn't designed like something the user is supposed to see all the time.
- It interferes with normal use for logged in users.
- It's not a sly way to reduce traffic on Chat GPT because nobody would treat users like that. Instead, it must be a bug; if Open AI wanted to reduce traffic from Chat GPT users, surely they would be transparent about it and show us a timer between prompts instead.
