Explore the dynamic and energetic art movement that celebrated technology, speed, and progress!
Futurism was an artistic and social movement that began in Italy in the early 20th century. Launched by Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in 1909 with his Manifesto of Futurism, it aimed to break away from the past and celebrate change, originality, and innovation. Futurism had a strong impact on other avant-garde movements such as Constructivism, Dada, Surrealism, and Vorticism.
Futurism rejected the past, but celebrated the modern world of industry and technology. It emphasized speed, youth, and modern objects such as cars and airplanes. The movement sought to show the energy of contemporary life in various art forms. Fururist artists explored diverse media, including painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, literature, music, and even cooking.
They used techniques such as fragmentation and repetition to illustrate motion and rhythm. While Cubism showed multiple views of an object through intersecting planes, Futurism added the portrayal of movement. This approach created effects akin to multiple photographic exposures of a moving subject. A prime example is Balla's 1912 painting "Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash," where the legs of a trotting dachshund are depicted as a blur of repeated images.
Some of the main artists of Futurism were Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini, and Luigi Russolo.
