Steps to reproduce:

  1. Login to ChatGPT with existing account. This should be the only account you have.
  2. Go to settings, delete the account re-typing email and word DELETE
  3. Setup new account with new email address
  4. Enter name, surname, birthdate
  5. Enter phone number for SMS validation

Expected result

SMS code arrives to the phone number

Actual result

I receive error message saying "This phone number is already linked to the maximum number of accounts."

Additional information

Browser: Brave 1.51.114
OS: MacOS Ventura 13.4

You can't use the same phone number that you've used for other accounts, even if they're deleted afaik.

thanks @jovial harbor for your reply. For me it's really confusing. If I'm able to provide OTP, it shows that I own the phone number that is being validated.
Now I'm left in limbo, not being able to restore deleted account and create new one, I cannot use the service.

That's correct. I think they warn you about not being able to use the phone and email in the future when you delete your account. Not much you can do aside from getting a new number or talking to their support. Either way, it's not a bug.

Hello, this my problem, as well Any solution or suggestion?

I used my organisation email to register for the openai account. I changed my organisation and found that the IT department of the previous organisation has revoked my access to that email address. So, I deleted openai account associated with the email address from which my access has revoked. Writing to support is not useful as they either provide a link to FAQ or not giving a practical solution. So, I'm reaching out to ask for your solution or to see this in not a bug but a policy!
