Hey folks! We just shipped and wanted to share with the community.

Magnet is an AI Coding Assistant that makes it easy to use GPT-4 & ChatGPT in the context of your own codebase. It’s a desktop application that runs for MacOS (Windows coming soon)

With the new coding capabilities of LLMs we wanted to start exploring what new AI tooling for building software might look like. We’re excited for some of what is coming up as well that tries to reimagine what some of the software dev workflows might look like when there’s an AI assistant along for the ride.

This first version is pretty simple but we’ve already been finding it pretty useful. It’s free to use if you put in your own OpenAI API Key so feel free to give it a spin (the hosted version uses our GPT-4 API key in case you want to try out GPT-4 and don’t have access yet).

Whats the difference in using this and chatgpt itself?

and how far can it read and store context? I notice in chatgpt you can send a maximum of 16k characters into the chat,and sometimes its not enough to send the complete code script.

Hey Herb! We'll need to look at what work is involved in shipping a Windows distribution, but it's definitely under consideration. We're also exploring making it available from the browser if integration with the file system works well (we need to explore a few things about the Filesystem APIs that the browser provides)

hey folks, I just shared the web version as a new post! cc @blissful tangle @pseudo atlas - we decided to focus on the web as we got it to feel essentially as smooth as the mac app

Right now my first experience is. Only chromium browser. I can’t use it on my phone🫣 so I’m back later at my pc

hey @pseudo atlas just to be clear if you use your own API key we don't see your code, if you use an API key, all we do is pass through the propts to our API and on to ChatGPT and then back

but fully hear you that security is generally a concern with code & hosted LLMs

🙂 Thanks for trying it Herb! Aboout the continue screen - we're just about to redesign it so it shows you your recent projects and more and makes it easy to jump back in to different places - fully agree that the Continue button isn't a great experience right now

Chat history is on the list of things we're planning on working on 🙂

What tabs would you like - just the ability to have multiple tabs in parallel and keep those histories?

We're going to work on the ability to create and accept changes this next little while
