I was using the api key with the official python library, but after a few days it started returning "You exceeded your current quota, please check your plan and billing details.". As far as I know, there are no limits on a free version of the api apart from the per minute limit. There is nothing in my billing limits either. What could be causing this?
#Exceeded quota, but there is seemingly no reason

There is no free api…
There is, and I have been using it for a few days before this message popped up
Sure. Can’t send a screenshot right now, but here is a link to the github page where I copied the code. It is the first one in the Usage section. It used to word fine, but now returns the message. https://github.com/openai/openai-python
I don't have a card attached to my account. So what was it charging before? Also, where did you get this information? I did not find any mentions of the pricing, only deals that they make for companies.

You never been free my guy
Scroll down
I saw this one, but judging by the pricing being for thousands at a time, I thought it would be for companies. But I have found that there is a 5 dollar trial available (on this page). Though, I would like to know for sure if this is what I have hit. If you look at the tutorials, nobody ever mentions the price, and people seemingly use this to this day.
It’s per token
Yea you used your $5 trial
After that you need to link a credit card it’s not a free service
Guess so. I wish it was written somewhere... Maybe where you copy the token, or maybe in the goddeamn error message 🙂
How so if the product itself is free?
It’s not free
where?
It is, I can go on the website right now and use it
How so if it is the same model? If anything, it is simpler for openai to manage
It’s not
It can provide much larger responses
And has less restrictions than ChatGPT
Not my issue. Should have made it the same or provide more explanation
Look, thanks. All i'm saying is that it is not really obvious
It really is tho
Obvious is when you are told if it is paid or not on the same page where you set it up
@scarlet turtle can you explain why the api isn’t free, I don’t feel like arguing
You are arguing for nothing. I get that it's not free. It is just dumb how they organized it
@tall saffron can you explain
I think op now understand
