I am building my own API wrapper in Swift: Do I understand correctly that when communicating chat-style I have to always send all messages so far back to the server? There isn't a way to refer to a chat by id or something of that sort?

OpenAI doesn't store the previous responses so you'll need to send atleast the last 4-5 messages with each new query. Tokens usage will be high.

There is not.
The grant is available for $18 or 3 months, whichever comes first. There is no way to extend it or get another grant.

As stated, extensions are not possible. You will need to pay for access from now on. OpenAI is very generous with a 3 month grant as is, and that should be plenty of time to figure out if the API is for you or not.

The pricing is based on usage, it is not a flat monthly fee, and your Plus subscription is a separate product.

You can contact sales to check out a dedicated solution, but you can expect to pay over $10,000 a month for that one. The API charges reasonable rates based on usage and you will want to price your products based on that.
I can provide advice though if you post your pricing and expected usage.
