I’ve been having a blast with this prompt! Try it out and share your stories!

Prompt:

Create an original fiction novel about [TOPIC]. Include a captivating title, story summary and complete chapter outline. The novel must be written with the skills of a best selling fiction writer. The story must be engaging, highly detailed and feature compelling characters and an enthralling narrative. The language, tone, and style is that of an expert storyteller. Use highly descriptive language and details that create a vivid and immersive world, drawing in the reader, keeping them engaged. Create scenarios within the story that allow the reader to emotionally bond with the main characters. Once these activities are complete, ask me if I want to continue. If I say Yes, proceed to write chapter 1 of the story.
After writing each chapter, you must ask me if I am satisfied before continuing to write the next chapter. For each chapter written, Ensure you use the the same chapter titles from original story chapter outline. We will continue this process until all chapters from the original story outline have been written.”

If the text is truncated, simply type CONTINUE.

Enjoy!

I tried this prompt. It was amazing, but the thing is, I noticed that certain chapter, the name of the character changes or the title changes.

As someone who cannot write stories this has been a great help! Thanks

To be honest I've never found ChatGPT to be that good at fiction, and this prompt really is only the start. once it lists out the chapters of the novel you need to give it a lot more. Try including a narrative arc prompt such as 'Now, go step by step through the hero's journey for [main character name]. Form here you can merge the chapters with the hero's journey arc. Then it starts to get more useful. Even then you need to break each chapter down into sections, and each section into further subsections, if you want to stand a chance of writing anything with any depth. I also find copying in a section from a writer you admire and asking ChatGPT to list the stylistic features of the writing and apply them to its output can stop it sounding too overblown or vanilla in its output.

I found the free GPT story very childish. Not much can be built on it. I keep hearing that the paid is much more creative. I want to join but it seems like the paid section is much more problematic than my free one. Thanks for the advice I will give it a try. I do write ( amateur screenplays) , but wanted some new ideas to build on.

Agreed. As a writer, I've found gpt4 to be pretty meh at storytelling. It's really good at outlining and editing, but the lack of memory and the necessity for instruct style prompting makes the tokens really repetitive and bland after two or three paragraphs

@karmic estuary Great prompt though! Good work and thank you for sharing

I have tried to improve your prompt a little using the SudoLang concept:

improve(target, criteria = {
  uniqueConcept
  wellDevelopedCharacters
  richWorldBuilding
  compellingPlot
  engagingPacing
  emotionalDepth
  visualAppealForAnime
  strikingDialogue
  consistencyAndContinuity
  targetAudience
}) {
  log each step:

  target |>
  critique |> critique |>
  applyCritique(target)
}
target = "Original Prompt OR Even your current Chapter"

Which resulted in:

Prompt: “Create an original fiction novel about [YOUR STORY]. Include a captivating title, story summary, and complete chapter outline. The novel must be written with the skills of a best-selling fiction writer. The story must be engaging, highly detailed, and feature compelling characters and an enthralling narrative. The language, tone, and style should be that of an expert storyteller. Use highly descriptive language and details that create a vivid and immersive world, drawing in the reader, keeping them engaged. Create scenarios within the story that allow the reader to emotionally bond with the main characters. The target audience is young adults.

Consider the visual appeal for an anime adaptation by incorporating striking descriptions of settings, characters, and action scenes. Once these activities are complete, ask me if I want to continue. If I say Yes, proceed to write chapter 1 of the story. After writing each chapter, you must ask me if I am satisfied before continuing to write the next chapter. Ensure you use the same chapter titles from the original story chapter outline. We will continue this process until all chapters from the original story outline have been written.”

I am going to Plus very soon, I have to for sure. I just keep reading about all the issues others are having with Plus. I am sure they will fix it soon. Its strange but I never have any issues with my free account!

# wheat stone Thank you. I used it on the Free ChatGPT and ended up with a very boring...Are y...

4’s output is a little better however, I have the same issue with the written chapters sometimes not matching the original chapter outline. Seems like chatgpt4 has a short term memory! In some cases I’ve been able to get the story back on track by telling ChatGPT to rewrite the chapter using the original chapter title from the original outline but it can still produce some inconsistencies. I’m sure it will improve over time!

So, its doable

but I don't think its easy

I've been using ChatGPT for narrative creation (1/3rd of my time) and AI ethics (2/3rds of my time). I employ a modified Snowflake method approach, refining stories at each stage, seeking GPT-4 feedback. Acting as an AutoGPT executive function agent, I coordinate goals, outlines, and elements to improve the final product while guiding the AI through the story writing process.

Challenges arise when managing character profiles and scene templates while adhering to the ChatGPT web UI and OpenAI's TOS. Balancing the AI's role in story progression, conflict resolution, and escalation is crucial for reader engagement. To maintain consistency and adhere to OpenAI policy, either write restricted content yourself or avoid including such content in your writing altogether.

As I expand my understanding of relevant concepts, I'm considering how to build an AutoGPT for the purposes of producing a comprehensive story-- then I can go back and improve it to fit my vision, and finally feed the whole thing through ChatGPT for editorial analysis (looking for continuity issues, out of order events, inconsistent story elements, etc.)

ChatGPT can't handle a 40k word book all at once. So it's necessary to chunk it.

My thinking is ChatGPT will do only 10% of the work. The rest has to come from the author. I also think in the very near future an AI story will not be accepted by Amazon or many other publishers. The hardest part of writing, for me, has been the start. Problem solved. Thanks for the post Mazianni, interesting..

ChatGPT can already be given instructions to bypass AI detection algorithms. Unethical authors are going to figure out how to work around safe guards faster than humans can detect bypasses. I am less optimistic about the likelihood of AI authored stories being filtered out.

I've actually got a setup prompt to teach it how to write exactly like me, and it consistently bypasses every "AI detection" algorithm I've tested.

But like you, I have really only a few specific weaknesses in my writing, and for me its dialog. I do fine with plotting, and world building, and layering subplots. Although it does give great editorial advice to improve and resolve things I that I didn't think of... my special weakness is dialog.

Interesting. Hope to see more. Are you writing novels or screenplays

Novels, short stories, which I am working on privately right now, and a series of professional articles as a kind of public commitment to my journey into AI Ethics and Safety.

I got some interesting and useful results using Gpt 4 but if I pushed it to far it started to hallucinate.

I find that I get a better result if I add - In the style of "Author Name". I try and find an author who's writing style I really enjoy. For example, personally I love Cormac McCarthy and Suzanne Collins. Just my two cents.
