#ChatGPT Plus: The payments page encountered an error

I am attempting to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus.

I click the "Upgrade to Plus" button. A "Your Account" dialog appears. I click the "Upgrade plan" button. Then this error message appears:

"The payments page encountered an error. Please try again."

I have tried this process numerous times on several browsers and different devices with the same results.

After I experienced this issue, two of my family members were able to upgrade their own accounts to ChatGPT Plus without issue.

So this has something to do with some weirdness of my account which others don't have.

I have the same issue. I tested it on a new email and it worked fine, so it’s something to do with the actual account. I’ve reached out to support, but no response yet.

do you have a phone number registered to your ChatGPT account details?

@tribal dagger same here. Maybe Google workspace is a problem?

you can also try these steps:

  1. Log out of all devices: Please ensure you have logged off from every device connected to your account. Once done, log back in.
  2. Disable VPNs and proxies: Ensure that all VPN and proxy connections are disabled on your devices.
  3. Disable problematic extensions: Check for any unnecessary browser extensions that could be causing issues and disable them. Please note that some antivirus software may interfere with your connection, so consider deactivating them temporarily.
  4. Firewalls: If you are using a work or school network with a firewall in place, try switching to a mobile data connection or using your cellphone as a hotspot.
  5. Browsers: Use a different browser or incognito mode: Test your connection in a new browser or by using your current browser's incognito mode. (Chorme/Edge are the same browser internally, try using firefox)
  6. Troubleshoot device-specific issues: If the issue persists only on your PC and not on your cellphone, review steps 1 through 5 to identify any potential issues on your PC.
  7. Contact support: If the problem remains unresolved even on your cellphone, please reach out to the support team at support@openai.com for further assistance.

My impression is that it is not a Micorsoft/Google thing. For instance, if you login with another Gmail account that you have not previously used with chatGPT, then you can upgrade to PLUS. So it seems to me that ChatGPT does not allow you to upgrade with accounts that you have already use.

It is working today also for Google account!

I am the Original Poster of this thread.

After numerous attempts to upgrade over the last five days, it has finally worked!

However, my OpenAI account credit card (which has $5,000 to spare) was declined. I then tried to enter a new card, but the card address fields were locked in a blank state, so the new card wouldn't go through.

So, I opened a new Incognito browser window, logged on, click Upgrade, and this time I entered a new credit card before clicking the Pay button. This worked (thank God).

OpenAI... As you seem to have trouble with basic e-commerce stuff. Perhaps you should just farm it out to PayPal or Stripe.
