Can't find where to sign up to start using api

I can't find where to sign up for the api so that I can start using it. I found the documentation and am already signed up as a user for chatGPT. But I'd like to start using it in an app.

I'm already signed up for chatGPT. So I'm signed in but there's no way to start using it. I assume you have to give them a credit card because there's a cost to use the api. And I don't see the sign up for API page.

Just generate an api key here and you're good to go https://platform.openai.com/account/api-keys

the api key is free to use unless your requests exceed $18

if it does just head over to "billing"

but i'd suggest not to add that until it goes past that

I see how to do it now. On the billing page you click on sign up for paid account.

Why not do that now?

You don't have to do that now because it takes a lot of tokens/requests to be made for you to exceed that, so I say just wait until you've maxed it out

Like i've made many requests and still not have used anything close to that, so it's better just to wait then you can see

Just for comparison you have: 18$ / 0.002$ × 1000 = 9,000,000 Tokens whichare ca. 6,750,000 words

Is that a per month thing, because you're already paying? Or is the api a separate cost entirely with no regard/connection to the plus subscription?
