Work cited for creating essays

I am building an essay writer for fun. I saw on Caktus.ai that the essays it generates has a work cited page. I'm wondering how I might get the API (or chatgpt in general) to cite the sources it uses for quotes in the essays I'm generating. Can anybody shine some light on this? To recap I am looking to create MLA format essays and auto generate the work cited. Generating the essays is no problem but having trouble generating the citations. Thank you in advance.
