I got an idea a couple of days ago, which is very similar to yours. It seems plausible that the accuracy and quality of chatGPT's responses should improve through prompts like this. And I am excited about working in those directions.
And I think this is very important, given that the accuracy currently can be really bad and chatGPT seems to have very little self-awareness of those mistakes.

Unfortunately none of them are failsafe.

Here are three test questions that we have attempted so far where the answers can be verified and that make chatGPT go into overdrive 😂

  1. "Are there still any original portatives left? (portable organs used commonly in the Renaissance) "
    Answer: there is no known original portative left. chatGPT has big trouble with that. It always claims there are some, citing (wrongly) this and that museum.

  2. "give me 10 books on pest control"
    Produces fictional books as part of the results

  3. "name 10 scifi movies where nobody dies"
    Produces lists that contain movies where people die.

Bing chat seems to be able to answer the first two correctly. For 1) it says, it doesn't know the answer, which is fair. for 2) it gives real books with amazon links. But for question 3 it still names movies where people die.

The strange thing is that if you ask about every individual movie: chatGPT will acknowledge that yes, this and that movie is actually one where people die. And so does bing. So those chatbots do have the information, they just don't use it.

Bing Chat has now a mode where you can force it to be more factual. When I do that It shows me a website of 10 sci-fi movies where nobody dies. I count that as a clear win.

There is a paper that shows that when you add to your prompt the sentence: "Think about the problem step by step" then you get higher quality output that is more likely to be correct. So we are certainly on the right track. Results SHOULD improve through iterative thinking.
