Hello all!

The first time I tried ChatGPT, I saw its potential to transform how we access and interact with knowledge.

I saw how the technology could be used towards a smarter, more intuitive, and more efficient approach to knowledge retrieval, marking an end to the days of sifting through endless search results to find the information we need.

That's when I went all in on creating Visus.ai. More than 60 days later, it's here!

Visus.ai makes it easy for anyone to train their own ChatGPT-like assistant, which is trained on their own knowledge base.

if i was wagering a guess it would be more like indexing to a local folder and having the language model converse over the contents of the index

#

great idea for a web site over all

#

i hope it flys well

lilac turret
#

Thank you so much for the kind words

#

Did you try it out?

red umbra
#

i havent i have a bot that has an index function tho. outside of training new models thru open ai. it seems the best way ive come across for referancing datasets that dont exist in the model without a google search format type conversation

#

well its not MY bot.. i just use it

lilac turret
#

I see, if you do, I would love to hear how ours compare to the one you are currently using

#

Like general intent identification, question structure, source referencing

red umbra
#

lol but querying against data from pdfs and such is awesome handy using the language model to desribe the data.. you never know if whats in the model is true or false in a generated answer so having it sumarise and converse over a local data set imo. is the best path with that end .. training a new model is prety intencive a process

#

il send you a dm

#

that way you can check it out and weigh it against your build

#

never know might find some ideas that inspire the website build

Anyhow, Discord is not the best place to have a mature discussion. The DMs I've gotten after posting here are weird af.

I'm posting about a product that my team & I spent over 2 months building, if you want to discuss the product then let's do it I'm more than happy to do so, but if you're going to be immature then I don't see how this is the right space. There are literally millions of communities where you can meme around.

Hey, Farouq, I just tried the product for a while. It looks amazing! Just curious, did you train other AI model built on top of ChatGPT? When I ask bot about something related to my uploaded document, it gives sources with a confidence score. Is this confidence score calculated by some other custom model you trained, or models provided by OpenAI?

dapper belfry
#

@lilac turret I tried asking it a few SAT questions with docs containing the sat passage and it performs better than chatgpt. Do you mind sharing the methods that allowed this model to understand the context and answer this much better?

Also, are you using a chatGPT api, or some other tool to summarize a text and respond?

@lilac turret Wow. I tried it before setting it to strict, and it gave an answer of imaginary for this question "“Hypothetical” most nearly means ? A) imaginary B) actual C) possible D) interesting". After strict mode, it outputted "possible", which was the right answer. Crazy

#

It's probably incorporating the other definitions of hypothetical more without strict mode being turned on, but I can't believe how much better it understood the text with this mode.

Hey, I found something interesting. I feed the model with my interview prep document. First, I ask model to explain my past project called Briefly: it got the answer right. However, when I ask it about action section, it give me result that was part of another project, not the same one I asked before lol.

#

Does model carries information of previous chat histroy? Or only the context provided in database?

lilac turret

#

Also, the Add to Focus List got several errors when I click it.

lilac turret
#

Yes, the focus list is exactly how this problem is addressed

#

but the error is not really how the intention was haha. Thanks for reporting the bug

lilac turret

#

Yeah that's all errors I got. Also, app is crashed when I click.

lilac turret
#

Can you refresh the conversation and try agian?

marble monolith
#

I tried refreshing, however, it seems something is keep running in background and prevent me from doing any clicks.

#

Probably an infinite loop?

lilac turret
#

So you're unable to use the app at all or only when adding a source?

marble monolith
#

I can, but I have to go back to reload page.

#

The error only occurs when I click Add to Focus List

lilac turret
#

I see, thanks for reporting I think I know the issue

marble monolith
#

Also, may I know how's each document being index? My initial thought is that we split it into several chunks based on heading1, heading2, etc. For each chunk of text we calculates it embedding and build a KNN on top of that, and compare similarity between document embeddings and user input embeddings?

I just deployed a new version of the frontend that should fix the bug you saw above. It should be available in ~3 minutes

Two questions:

Can you read a google drive folder?
Where does the data get stored? This is amazing but I have real concerns about private company data being indexed on a USA based server (I'm canadian)

With that being said, servers holding user data use full disk, industry-standard AES 256 encryption.

To directly answer your question, we are using a multitude of models to power Visus, some are our own.

Prior to ChatGPT API, Davinci was available which is arguably better than ChatGPT (albeit more expensive).

With that being said, we are already experimenting with the ChatGPT API and are trying to have it in production next week

lilac turret

lilac turret
# frosty lava If i go in projects I am looking for something I can roll myself. Not just visit...

Are you sure that you are actually looking for something you can roll yourself? Because in that case you're most likely looking in the wrong place.

We connect to a multitude of models, some of which are our own. We will not allow access to those models the same way as we won't expose the exact algorithms that we use for knowledge retrieval.

I don't understand why some people feel entitled to be able to roll the system "themselves". We've spent hundreds of engineering hours to get the product that we built, and we are not going to release it as open source because:

a) We are not interested in open-source as a monetization model. People work hard on this, and they need to get paid.
b) 99.99% of people won't even bother implementing Visus if it was open-source because they lack the experience required.

There are countless free papers being produced every week on all kinds of topics in regard to LLMs, and many of these papers include Github source codes. There are countless FREE models available on Huggingface that you can use instantly. There are HUGE communities where you can learn more about LLMs. The resources are out there.

Saying that "most projects are just products" is misleading. For each product available there are probably hundreds of papers and open-source projects available.

The missing part is doing the hard work. The resources are available, it's what you do with them.

# lilac turret Are you sure that you are *actually* looking for something you can roll yourself...

And no this is not the wrong place to look for PROJECTS, it is the projects channel. You should not take space here and waste people's time when they are looking for projects instead of a PRODUCT. As you mentioned a PRODUCT can be made of different projects just like yours. The fact that also you are so arrogant in defining who is entitled to do what is also quite unsettling.

Again this is not the right place. I am not a customer for a product. I am looking for projects from other people to learn and not to consume.

lilac turret
# frosty lava And no this is not the wrong place to look for PROJECTS, it is the projects chan...

I don't care if you are a customer for a product. I don't care that you are looking to learn. You don't define if this is the right place or not. There are 279 projects as of now in this section, many of which are paid products. Deal with it.

If your intention is to learn then be polite, ask questions, and ask the right ones. I've helped countless people throughout the years, over 10 from this Discord post alone in my DMs.

Requesting access to private repos is entitled, lazy, and frankly insulting. I don't reach out to OpenAI and ask for their source code because I want to "learn".

You want open-source? Good. Go make your own project and make it open-source.

# lilac turret Haha, what do you want to learn?

I would, like them most likely, personally like to know how to just get GPT models to work off of PDFs that I feed them. It would be incredibly useful for specific topic-matters in my research for University. Too bad this stuff is cropping up mostly half way through my last semester of my degree.

#

Also, I've already had to cough up some extra money for GPT Plus. I don't think I can afford another $20 a month. The price is a little steep for people in my position, to be honest.

#

So the way GPT works, it can only handle a certain # of tokens. So if you call for information that requires the bot to retrieve data from multiple files, it will eventually hit the # token threshold and then only give you a half baked answer because it won’t be able to use all of the information as part of the context, right? @lilac turret

willow fractal
#

So as I understand it, this thing can only retrieve data. It can't actually do anything with it

lilac turret
willow fractal
#

Yea I tried Visus. I imported a coding project, and asked it to write some code for me based on those files, and it wasn’t able to do it accurately - it didn’t even take into account some of the files.

#

It may be good for data retrieval since you’re using vector databases to allow the context window include all of the data, but it isn’t good at performing actions on the retrieved data

#

So to be honest, I see this product as more of like a simple tool that retrieves files for you and just plugs them into your prompt so you don’t have to, saving you a few minutes of time

#

You can already do this with regular ChatGPT, where you just copy and paste the data into the prompt and tell it to do something.
-prompt here-
-data here-

#

I can see a good use case for this though - when the user doesn’t know what data to exactly send. This product would do the thinking for the user and only retrieve the files needed. But that’s the best case

#

If you have any actual other use cases, please let me know - I’d be interested

#

All of that is about the developer scope of things

#

I can see this being used for websites where people want to ask questions about a product or something, and the bot can answer using the data

#

Even good for law documents and lengthy stuff like that I guess - data retrieval all around

civic tendon
#

I tried uploading my journal and asking questions and it didn’t impress to be honest. Cool tool, but I wouldn’t trust it as a credible research tool. I have it 138 pages worth of information on my life and it couldn’t answer who my best friend was clearly

willow fractal
#

Yep probably because it’s vector similarity algorithms aren’t good yet

lilac turret
#

Both of your use cases are not intended, especially the programming part, either way thanks for the feedback
