#ChatGPT does not seem to learn, from one day to the next. Isn't it supposed to?

Yesterday, I asked it when the next solar eclipse will be, and it said April 2024. I corrected it by noting NASA has said there is a total solar eclipse in October 2023. I even presented the web link. I was impressed that ChatGPT said "Oh, thanks for that, and sorry for my mistake." It even noted that it apparently found the map for viewing totality across some of the United States, in the web site I gave it. Impressive, I thought. However, today it gives the same canned answer about the next solar eclipse in April 2024. Very disappointing.

If it does not learn automatically, how does it 'learn'? From my perspective, it is only programmed to sound like it can learn.

you clearly didn't read the big text that pops up when you open chatgtp, but it's not built for learning. it's built for using knowledge up until 2021 and giving you answers from there

And no, chatgpt doesnt learn from day to day unless you specifically teach it using the same chat

There multiple errors there.

  1. Two eclipses can’t be 10 days apart.
  2. Two solar eclipses can’t be less than 28 days apart.
  3. There is a hybrid eclipse in 2023, but it is in April. Neither of the eclipses in October are hybrid.
  4. So, it knows there are solar eclipses in 2023, but ask it “When is the next solar eclipse?”. It says 2024.

Solar eclipses depends also on location. Assistant could calculate the solar eclipse for a defined location if you point it in the right direction. Else Assistant can only assume or hallucinate.
This is how the model works.
