You can maybe provide examples for it to understand what you would like. For example, the prompt below provides examples of free verse poems that I found online:
The three example texts belong to a style called freeV. In the following I will ask you to provide text in the style of freeV
example 1 :
"I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass"
example 2:
"A touch of cold in the Autumn night –
I walked abroad,
And saw the ruddy moon lean over a hedge
Like a red-faced farmer"
example 3
"The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on."
If I ask to provide a text about flowers in the style of freeV it will make text that rhymes less but it still rhymes at times as shown in the image. Maybe giving it more examples will make it stop rhyming entirely? In any case, it realized that the text was poetry it seems.
Thank you, but I note that lines 2 and 4 rhyme, 6 and 8 rhyme, and 10 and 12 rhyme.
Every stanza contains rhyming.
I have been able to get it to emulate that pattern, in fact, that is the absolute minimum amount of rhyming I have been able to get it to produce in works longer than 4 lines.
To me, that's still a rhyming poem. Very patternistically rhyming at that, for all the rhymes are spread across 4 lines, but are present every 4 lines.
Challenge remains open to my sense of the word!
Please offer related ideas and attemps.
Randuser, fantastic work, thank you for your effort and involvement, I love this and it illustrates beautifully a benchmark of 'the closest I am aware it's possible to get' - can anyone get closer to many-line poetry that does not rhyme?
I gave it 2 more examples I found online and it seems to be learning to use rhymes less. Now the rhymes are less structured
sucess
I got it to make a poem with no rhymes
Nice work! Also, stanzas of three lines might also help, I had not explored that at all! I note only two rhymes, lines 2 and 3, lines 11 and 12.
Definite progress! Unsure how repeatable, but will involve in my own testing.

example 4
"I would want to establish strength; root-like,
anchored in the hopes of solidity.
Forsake the contamination of instability.
Prove I’m the poet of each line of prose.
Who needs the weakness of low self-esteem
when your fingers can grip the heart "
example 5
"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night,
who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking in the supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities contemplating jazz,
who bared their brains to Heaven under the El and saw Mohammedan angels staggering on tenement roofs illuminated"
example 6
"See, they return; ah, see the tentative
Movements, and the slow feet,
The trouble in the pace and the uncertain
Wavering!
See, they return, one, and by one,
With fear, as half-awakened;
As if the snow should hesitate
And murmur in the wind,
and half turn back;
These were the "Wing'd-with-Awe,"
inviolable."
Fantastic. Was just about to ask for your prompt!
I realize that I should have said 6 examples and not three but chatGPT did not seem to mind my innumeracy
I'll leave this open with the name 'request for help/open challenge' because others might want to attempt this with a different way to solve it.
I welcome other ways to solve this challenge, if any find a way! In a while I will rename this to a clear indication of how to create non-rhyming poetry.
Please participate, everyone who is interested!
Yeah, it's super tolerant of stuff like that, from typos to math errors... and it math errors too!
Umm. I cannot reproduce this. Not with a single prompt.
I tried three times, and the third I copy-pasted your entire prompt with no changes. I got this result:
[Sure, here is a text in the style of freeV:
"The wind whispers secrets in my ear,
Of far-off lands and skies so clear.
It tells me tales of love and loss,
Of ships that sail, at any cost.
And as I listen to its song,
I feel my spirit start to long
For all the beauty that it brings,
And all the joy that it brings within."]
I note rhyming. lines 1 and 2, lines 5 and 6.
So, can you please share your stepwise prompts that guided you to success?
Were you pointing out errors between the additional examples? I'd love to see the whole conversation, at least your prompts, so I can better try to emulate it.
I usually make new chats when experimenting with this because I want to avoid the effect of the environment of the chat. I did not give ChatGPT guidance
I will copy past what I sent (without the part that says the prompt in bold) and see if it works
I got this:
Sure, here's a text in the style of freeV:
"I walked along the shore, the waves calling my name
The wind carried the whispers of distant memories and dreams.
The sand shifted beneath my feet, and I felt weightless,
As I gazed upon the vast horizon and the endless sea."
Did you use a new chat ?
It is the one with 6 examples where chatGPT stopped rhyming.
Yes, I tried 3 different new chats. I pasted your prompt with tiny changes in the first two attempts, then the third was a straight copy paste, out of concern I was triggering rhymes by my changes.
I tried with the playground from the openAI website which uses gpt3 instead of chatGPT and indeed the poem still had rhymes.
I got this example using the playground:
I specified that the poems should not rhyme while providing the examples above
Example of text in the style of freeV which does not have any rhymes:
"My voice echoes off the walls of my mind,
Like a whisper in the night.
The memories of the past linger in my thoughts,
Drifting through my soul like a gentle breeze.
I am the captain of my own ship,
Searching for a place to call home.
My heart is aflame with a passion to explore,
To find something that no one has seen before."
The prompt I gave:

I had tried that as well, and got TONS of rhymes. I wonder if saying rhyme is a problem.
I noticed that if I increase the temperature on the playground it increases the number of rhymes
did you set the temperature to 0 ?
I'm working PURELY in ChatGPT interface. I don't even know how to use the playground. Can I set temp from the web interface with ChatGPT?
oh by "I had tried that as well" you meant you tried telling it to not rhyme. I understood that you also used the playground.
I also seem to get more rhymes with the prompt I wrote if I tell it not to use rhymes on chatGPT.
No, you can not adjust the temperature with chatGPT as far as I know.
The playground is fairly straightforward to use. I think it's all you might need for generating poetry but it does not have a chat interface.
I tried telling it not to rhyme, in my prompts through the ChatGPT interface
I had this fun little interaction while playing with @delicate socket's second freeV prompt
Thanks! Yeah, that poor bot loves rhymes so much, it's like it breaks its brain trying to hide them and forget them and keep them.
I love that it thinks it rhymed on the one pair where it didn't
Yeah. It's almost the feel of a young kid that thinks they are caught. They have three pieces of candy they shouldn't. Ask em if they have candy they shouldn't... and they say yeah, and give you one piece, and something that isn't candy, and don't mention the other two.
