Description

As far as I know, ChatGPT has pretty good grammar. You can ask it to correct your grammar or to correct the grammar of someone else.

[EDIT: I later saw some articles by an author on Medium named Konstantin Savenkov that seems to work for some translation company or something that mentioned that ChatGPT is fairly good at translating English to Spanish but it can make some grammar mistakes in translating English to German]

The prompt

Note for reader: You can just ask chatGPT to correct the text. The prompt below is mainly to show how much it can do.

In the following, I will provide text with mistakes. I want you to answer by doing the following

  • Display the correction

  • Display the original text

  • Provide an explanation for your correction

Examples

Example sentences

Here are some examples of bad grammar that was generated by ChatGPT. I ranked a grammar example as hard if Grammarly did not detect it.

**Easy**

- Me no like that place, they got bad food.

- She don't like to eat vegetables.

** Medium**

- The teacher was mad because the students wasn't paying attention.

- I done my homework already, can we watch TV now?"

- The teacher always yell at us for talking in class.

- The dog chased it's tail for hours.

**Hard**

- Me and my friend going to the park to play soccer.
  • I was one of the first people to arrive at the party.

The last one "I was one of the first people to arrive at the party." is maybe debatable.

It was provided by ChatGPT but ChatGPT did not find an error with the prompt above.

Sometimes when ChatGPT generates examples with grammar mistakes,
It explains why. It provided an example for this sentence and it wrote:

Incorrect use of "one" instead of "I was the first".

Perhaps logically this makes sense as the first is usually unique and so one of the first is perhaps in essence often incorrect if not just vague as in "among the first few".

But what if you want text in present tense? The outcome I get is often past tense, and sometime present tense. i.e. its all over the place. All language models I've tried have this issue (paid and free versions) My work text is in present tense and in an other AI I made a tense detector, that helps identifying, after you can edit... manually. Somewhat time consuming. Are there other ways?
