Steps to reproduce:

  1. I am a paid user of the OpenAI services.
  2. I am trying to pay for the chatplus service, but I am unable to receive the phone code verification.

Expected result:

Receive the phone code verification and be able to pay for the chatplus service.

Actual result:

I am unable to receive the verification code, and if I ask to send me an email instead, the system asks me to confirm my phone number. However, when I enter my number, it says it doesn't match the number of my account which is wrong since is the one I used for verify my account when creating it and I even have the original verification messages stored on it.
*(*The phone number that OpenAI seems to be asking me to verify seems to be an old phone number of me that I have never provided to OpenAI and now might be in hands of another person from years ago and I am shocked and uncomfortable about how OpenAI has obtained this information about my past phone number which I have never provided )

Additional information

  1. Browser: Chrome
  2. OS: MacOS

UPDATE: After further testing and investigation I discovered that in the moment that you click the link to buy the service by using link.co and stripe their old databases overwrite the recent information in OPENAI so it u had another phone number or credit cards stored in link.to or stripe that old information will be overwritten for the payment, and you will not be able to verify it unless you still having access to that old number or cards or account*

I am in the same boat, the ChatGPT plus payment interface has a very old phone number of mine, and not the one I actually verified my account with.

I just looked and all I have is a "Your OpenAI API Verification" code, so I thinks that a yes?

Same problem, but it listed a number I've never used before. Can't find a way to update phone number, help button doesn't work.

Yes, so it means when you created the account he sent you a message to the correct number. You registered that account with that number, but right now the system has decided for some reason to change that number to another number of your past

The only reason I can imagine for this is that they were mixing/matching your information on a database where there was already information about you and they might have replaced your new phone by the old one by mistake

@torpid monolith @pulsar frost Hey guys I just want to tell you I have identified and fixed the issue

As I guessed before OPENAI does in fact mix the information you have provided related to your email with other databases where they have access to, it includes Stripe and Link

And if you have an account on any of them that you might have created even years ago with an old phone number, they will update your current phone number to the old phone number you used in Stripe or link

So the phone number they are asking you to introduce to get your verification by email is the phone number you have used in the past to create your Link or Stripe account

So when you want to buy the Chatbot Plus, introduce if you can remember your old phone number and it will allow you to get ur verification code by email and you will be able to make the purchase

However it does not fix the big issue and mess up that OpenAi is doing by manipulating our personal data and modifying without consent

I would try to go stripe or link and modify there your data and hope that the OpenAi system updates it with your right phone numbers

This is a very serious issue but since OPENAI does not even have a real support system where to report these things and there is no way to talk anyone I guess we are alone on this

Ok this is more messed up that I thought, the company making all the trouble is Link.co

I joined there after complete my payment (I even did not know I had an account in that platform). Because of course I wanted to change my old phone number for the new one

So I was able to login by using my email and I have found that yes, they had my old wrong number
So I clicked on it and i asked to change it and they told me I should reset my whole account to change my phone number

But since I dont care at all about it I did a whole reset

So i lost purchases and info and blah blah blah (by the way they also had a very old credit card of mine that is even out of date) but at least now it was connected to my new phone number

But you know what? I logged in another device just to make sure that everything was ok and when I joined... guess what? my dam phone number was changed again and this time they showed me a number I absolutely do not recognize!!!!!!!

And this platform allows you to login just by sending a text message, so its extremely vulnerable

So I just absolutely deleted my account from link.co and I hope I never hear about them again

Anyway im gonna check now stripe and google, because seems like OPENAI is really sharing private information including cards, passwords and phone numbers with other parties and if you dont have exactly the same information in every single account (because maybe u did not use it on years and u changed ur number or ur country or ur card) there is risk that OpenAI updates your information wrongly

And that is!

At least i have my Chatbot Plus working, at the moment!
