Is this limitation just for the sake of performance at scale or are there other reasons to keep it limited to 4K tokens?

It’s just the amount that it can process at once. If it was scaled to 5k or a larger number you wouldn’t have as quick of a return

I tried this also, we made a character which went amazingly. But I couldn't get AI to engage in a back and forth role play or get it to engage in a fight scene. Gave me a great story where I had a son and he took over for me before I even got started.

Yes it tends to take over your character as well as running the NPC and produce a result instead of focusing on the NPCs actions. It tries to create a story using both.

It's become difficult to establish some guardrails and have them be concrete as progression occurs. A month ago or so ChatGPT would not switch roles but recently it happens often.

i started to use this to recreate our groups dnd campaign as a story it done well mostly but it did get aspects wrong unfortunately but excited to see how this improves
