Bug Report: ChatGPT will provide a summary about research on a given topic and cite academic journal articles that do not exist.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Ask ChatGPT to summarize a topic with citations from academic research.
  2. Look up the academic journals cited.

Expected result:

Discover that the article exists but the summary is limited to information from the abstract or second-hand summaries.

Actual result:

The article does not exist whatsoever in the published record. The referenced issue and number of the journal are for a completely different article. The citation appears invented based on publications by the author(s) who wrote on similar topics.
