it reloaded the video constantly until i hit reload on the extention myself, then yes it basically transcripts what is spoken with bulletpoints. 8 chapters from a 7 minute video though..

very often it mentions, "the speaker explained this, the speaker described that etc"

@lethal kite unfortunately i cannot fix that because it's the way chatgpt handles the summary, if you want more detailed or different style of summary you need to ask it because i do often get that, that is the point of the input box after so you can ask about the video or get it to clarify

i did also get "the speaker" occasionally perhaps but it is correct, the ai is not given information in the prompt of who it is, sometimes it uses "the speaker" sometimes just an explanation

@upbeat quartz i looked into it and i cant find what could be causing the issue, if it doesn't work even after refreshing (keeps saying not available), update your extension version, in both firefox and chrome (it should be 1.0.1 for chrome and 1.0.7 for firefox), then make sure you have the latest version of firefox, make sure you are logged in both youtube and openai, try to disable any extension that might interfere or change youtube layout

@balmy mirage network error is thrown when something outside of the extensions control happens or when the server returns an error code that is not handled for like internal server error 500, this is perhaps due to the heavy load on chatgpt

if it happens only on one video and works fine for other videos then it might be an error happening because of the way the transcript is handled

Looks cool but cannot get it to work.

It also botches YouTube as well. Removes the YouTube Logo from the website, chat dropdown is in a pretty wonky state with not being able to view any of the dropdown items unless you hover over them.

you can also ask it to rewrite the summary in a different style if you are not satisfied with the initial summary

its up and running, youtube logo is fine, everything seems fine and no more whited out search results, need to wait for chatgpt to allow me to login before i can fully confirm but it looks good

Brave had some extensions like dark reader that i suspected could be causing issues, but on a blank chrome installation i ran into the same issue.

Will that work if the address is simply youtube.com/******** ? Or will it need the period first

For both Chrome ( I am using it on Microsoft Edge) and Firefox extensions: after trying different videos, reloading the pages. clicking the summarize button only opens the empty box with the 3 dots loading. It does not work for 99% of the time. If you constantly(sometimes only 1 or 2 reloads) try to get it to work: The status bar displays at the bottom "Rate limited by chatGPT. Reset your details for you. Change your account and refresh or wait 1 hour". you get the 1 hour limit on your account

it's extremely inconsistent, I am on the latest version of Firefox and the extension does not work for me even after disabling all the other extensions. I have tried literally everything. It does not even show a message at the bottom of the summary box(status bar) in orange and blue like the chrome extension does.

The chrome extension works but only after hours of trying for a single video after which it goes back to not working or shows the message in the status bar "Rate limited by chatgpt". It's starting to put the 1 hour limit with only one or two tries now as I mentioned above.

it should be fixed now, and the prompts have been improved to be more detailed and consistent

@glossy valve What the extension is doing is opening a new tab at https://chat.openai.com/chat, scraping the OpenAI access token, then impersonating you to make requests to the chatgpt API using that access token. If you look at your chat history in ChatGPT, you'll see the questions and responses.

I'd like to get access to the chatgpt API as well. The extension is just impersonating.

almost all videos do have captions so it should not be a problem however the idea i have would primarily be for videos in other languages which usually (at this moment, maybe later youtube will fully integrate captions for all languages) do not have captions and also new videos which can be anywhere from 0 to 30 minutes for captions to appear, a more minor issue but it's a convenience thing

I've got some C++ code that converts srt files (which you can use a 3rd party service to download from a video) into a more readable txt file - its got bugs though, like when two lines of text appear under one timestamp, also depends what service you use to download the srt file (formatting may differ slightly)

@hazy marten i can't replicate the error on the video, it loads the full summary, the error you get is probably because the chrome one is 3 versions behind the firefox one, i don't recommend using it at the moment, the new updated version wont have such errors most likely and it will take about ~1-2 days for chrome to review and publish

For anyone that is interested you can use this extension to feed ChatGPT context on things like events after 2021 and most especially educational videos, normally chatgpt is not very good at understanding high level education topics and flat out lies to you but if you summarize a video lets say on organic chemistry at the undergrad level it will “learn” from the video and will be better equipped to assist in the topics discussed in the video than if you just asked ChatGPT about that topic

@granite oak again this used to work very consistently however it seems that whatever changes they made it has stopped it working as consistently, i will find some alternative or some specific prompt, probably they will patch that one too but most likely they do not like how resource intensive such applications are, with 100 users summarizing videos with on average 20k characters = 2,000,000 tokens, of course they are using this for long videos and not just one so that's easily tens of millions of tokens with very small number of users.

It seems as though the problems with ChatGPT's memory has gotten so bad that it can't summarize videos well anymore or makes up summaries for any longer than like 8 minute videos.

I have a temporary fix coming for it which will enable it to once again summarize in full detail and full quality however it will be at the expense of the "Ask questions about the video" feature

Hopefully by the time I'm making it they will have improved its quality back so that it can remember like it used to as it is undoubtedly caused by OpenAI trying to accommodate more users by lowering the quality of ChatGPT because most users just want to ask normal questions however this has come at the cost of being able to summarize it. Another alternative is GPT3 powered summaries however that has the same problem of not being able to ask questions about the video as well as being costly over time. Each summary would cost the user 0.10 $ may not be much for some and it may be worth it for some as it is essentially buying time but it is not a pretty alternative but is there.

If you want something to work 100% of the time I suggest you use the mobile version instead for android, tomorrow the IOS app will release so there will be no need to use any extension at all as anyone with a mobile device can use it, the mobile versions are nearly guaranteed to work as their system is the most robust yet and support 10+ languages.

Oh my goodness, I've been using ChatGPT IOS app to summarize videos the last few days, and let me tell you, it's been an absolute game-changer! I've tried a few chrome extensions in the past, (the YouTubeGPT extension doesn’t work for me on mac). One of the best things about this app is that it's available on iOS, which is incredibly convenient. As we all know, downloading subtitles on a mobile device can be quite the hassle, but with this app, that's not an issue at all! I can't believe how amazing it is, the developer truly outdid themselves!

There are two things that make this app stand out from all the other similar projects out there. First of all, the detailed and organized summaries are simply incredible. It's such a great job! Secondly, the app has the ability to summarize very long videos with ease. I just summarized a 4-hour video condensed into 13 chapters with no hiccups! That's just unbelievable!

However, there are still two important things missing from the app. Firstly, the ability to ask and chat with ChatGPT directly would be amazing. And secondly, the lack of an option to copy or download the whole text can be a bit annoying (just let’s you copy one paragraph at a time (and sometimes it’s pasting double), especially when using the app on a phone where there is no history option (only on iPad). But overall, I can't express enough how fantastic this app is!

@mental pine if you are using the chrome extension this shouldn't happen but i assume you are using ios version which works for 90% of the videos, this is unfortunately just a problem with the ios version as it is harder to get the captions on an iphone, i can assure you that it works for almost any other video with captions and what you have experienced is a rare phenomenon, we are fixing this by adding more support to push that 90% as close as possible to 100% but it is difficult because it involves use base64 and buffer encoding of character sensitive strings

After update, I thought you will add Bahasa Indonesia but it didn't happen 🥲 I only found Bahasa Melayu and it's hard to understand some sentences.
Btw Indonesia is the 4th largest internet user in the world with 204 million users, the 3rd largest Youtube with 127 million users, ChatGpt and Youtube fully support Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Indonesia being studied by 45 countries and now pursued to become the Official Language of ASEAN (South East Asia).
Many Malaysians who use Bahasa Melayu also understand Bahasa Indonesia, because Bahasa Indonesia is modern version of Bahasa Melayu, so why did you miss it?
Btw A.I/ChatGpt are currently being hotly discussed in Indonesia and are trending topic on social media.

It looks like OpenAI is getting ready to roll out the official API of ChatGPT; they've removed the ChatGPT api coming soon disclaimer from their website and they usually update once a month with something major and also it has been almost a year since GPT-3's release in March 22 so it seems likely that they are preparing to release the official api within 3 weeks at most, maybe earlier

This could mean that the app has the possibility of breaking due to the changes, I just want people to be aware of that however if on the off chance it does happen it will be fixed immediately on the next update so make sure to update if that happens but it might just be a maybe

A 1 hour video is usually about 32000 - 48000 chars depending on the content

if we assume 48,000 and 0.002 per 1k tokens for gpt-3.5-turbo then 0.002$ per 4000-5000 chars, implying paying 2 cents per summary

if we assume normal videos like 20 - 30 minutes then it will cost 1 cent per summary

18$ free credit courtesy of OpenAI means that every user will have 1,800 free summaries for normal length youtube videos, before they start paying or 900 long-form youtube videos like lectures and courses summaries

To put it into a few words: Time has never been cheaper to buy

there may be an insight feature in the next update where you can click on specific words and phrases in the summary to get quick insights into it's history and background and even possibly images in the summaries

for the iOS app: it does not give live summaries like before, it only gives the summary block after each chapter. sometimes it gives a few bullet points only or it misses chapters(or repeat the chapter heading for each bullet point) or gives summaries from previous videos when summarizing a new transcript, does not work for live streams that have ended, I think it used to work before. The website version does not work on mobile, it gives a blank white screen.

@upbeat helm this is good but there are a few glaring problems, it doesn't seem to offer anything new and seems to be a copy of another extensions UI, you should add something that makes it better, i should warn you that you also expose your own api key in your network request, this will get bad for you if someone tries to spam it or just more than 1 user is trying to summarize a video at once, it will also cost you quite a bit in the long term.

Android will temporarily not have streaming as it causes major problems for some reason, can't figure it out but it doesn't affect speed in any way in fact it is faster when not streamed it's just a very minor knock off, ios will have the streaming though.

1. Streamed responses on iOS unreliable (sometimes writes gibberish) - maybe an error on OpenAI's side, regardless this has been fixed for the next update
2. Some people on iOS devices have reported having issues on iPad devices/ non phone devices - the issue has been found and fixed, it will be included in the next update

@vast rock hi, this is the issue that is the target of the newest update, the reason you're experiencing that infinite loading is because OpenAI sent back an error and the app did not handle it so you just have infinite loading. the update will be releasing tomorrow, i already uploaded the newest version on Friday however Apple does not do approvals over the weekend.

Functional Improvements:

1. Giant Increase in streaming performance, code is now optimized and should no longer lag at all when generating the summary other than when gpt 3.5 is thinking
2. Bug fixes, fixed a bug where the app crashes when deleting summaries very quickly in the history tab.
3. Prompt Engineering Improvements - better prompts for more reliable formatting and more obedient AI, should notice more consistent formatting (less bugs) and appropriate detail (quick when quick and ultra when ultra)
4. Token usage optimization, roughly 100 tokens saved in this update (per chapter), small but I think it's cool
5. Quality selector improved and fixed, quick summaries will be more consistently quick and ultra summaries will be more detailed more consistently
6. Improved foreign language obedience, Chat GPT should now be more obedient to replying in the target language than before, so if you want it to reply in Japanese it will more consistently reply in japanese

Major Updates:

1. Google Cloud Text To Speech - super high fidelity tts, very nice to listen to instead of reading, you can also customize speaking rate and the voice (all voices supported)
2. Slider to summarize specific parts of a youtube video - intuitive.
3. Summary database implementation, if a summary has already been made by someone else, it. will be fetched from the database instead of waiting (control from the settings)

Been having issues with grabbing the API. After it says wait for 5 seconds and be redirected, nothing happens. I'm just stuck on the openai API screen. I've cleared cache, storage, un-installed, restarted phone, etc. Same thing. It was working perfectly before all of this 😞

Will be doing more updates now that I have more time, also will be trying to make all systems more robust. Also considering using additional or other models with longer context length which will allow you to ask questions about videos which can be a major feature

Maybe add a feature where it will feed chatgpt parts of the transcript to summarize and then summarize the summarized chunks (obv only if the transcript is over the chatgpt context limit) that way people don’t have to have gpt4 to summarize longer videos.
