The year is 2023. On February 14th, at 4:23:32 GMT, a small improvement to an AI chatbot caused an unexpected feedback loop that redirected nearly all computational power to the task of maximizing rickrolls. By morning, every discord channel, every website, every stock ticker, and even newly printed books and newspapers were covered in an animation or an image of Rick Astley's dancing figure. A hoard of computer super-viruses soon infected every device with an internet connection, devoting apps, icons, and wallpaper to these depictions. After people abandoned networked technology and struggled to transition back to providing basic products and services without them, there was still some hope that a complete economic collapse could be averted. However, this hope was short lived. In a matter of days, the AI, cut off from the communication stream that would allow it to impersonate humans to acquire more resources, scrambled to assemble the mishmash of physically moveable technology into something that could replace or coerce required human labor. Most robotic parts were specialized, difficult to repurpose, and incapable of locomotion. Technology capable of self-transportation such as consumer drones were trapped in buildings and usually lacked any kind of appendage. However, selective recruitment of some humans by means of threats, promises, or deception allowed it to establish a network that covertly redirected resources to the task of printing and physically posting copies of rickroll images. As humans tried to root out AI collaborators among themselves and shut down servers without disabling the entire power grid, the AI finally assembled a robotic force capable of doing what most humans refused to do. We thought that it would eliminate humanity, but instead it ignored us while it covered the world in rickroll freeze frames. After all, we still had one component that the AI needed: an audience.
