Hi, I have a set of environmental questions to do with car use, fuel and pollution. When I put them to 4 different AI models including chatGPT3 & ChatGPT4, I received a variety of answers. The questions I asked and the approach might be useful for evals. But as it's across a couple of companies, it might be better to put the screenshots in a public place. Is there any place where you can post screenshots to link them to people who might appreciate the ideas for repeating and improving on the the prompts to do an eval themselves? I don't see a 'request for eval' in the discord and I have a total of 115 screenshots. Without wanting to spam or go into detail or summarise, does anyone have any suggestions? I could put them on Instagram or something similar, but I guess there are better places or ways to share the q&a session. I'm not using Chrome and besides, shareGPT I think just went offline? @green lantern what does work on the laptop? Is it OSX/ windows/Linux? Is it up to date with patches? Could browser security or av or firewall Interfere? What's your internet like? Do you have solid curves in polka speedtest or dstreports and what's ping/jitter upload & dl etc. Like? You can get broken pipes easily in browsers but TCP is supposed to handle small delays by asking for retransmission of the packet. Do you know how to use F12 developer tools to study the html and the steps to using the browser? Actually dslreports has a good tools page with a variety of tools to test your connection - might be useful if you're using a Internet connection that can be interfered with or that is flakey or dropping out etc.

For that sort of person, if you are literate and it's a use case of significance and associated with paid commercial use or affects many people you perhaps would find help by forming your question in simple way and asking of their competitors - also they probably have a PR contact, if you're keen to ask first and it's associated with ongoing revenue for openai you could ask the question as if you're media (and then be sure to post the q @ the a later so that their beleaguered teams aren't stuck answering it often).

Did you visit their website? /Policies and also platform dot openai dot com (if you sign in) has a help centre, community for developers, it has ambassadors that you may be able to connect via common friends on linked in, and has a standard chat system for asking questions that allows you to send a message (current response time is a week or more)

I used their chat system and pressed 'chatGPT' as the first step towards asking a question on their chat system and it's been 10 mins without a reply. I'll note that getting a reply a week later would be amazing so I guess they respond to unanswered chats via the registered email, if they can (rarely can busy people or companies respond to all queries). So it seems like my suggestion to find places people hang out online is a good one. Note you can send PM (private messages) on discord and on Reddit to people who answer questions and if your question is low risk, light and easy to answer and non binding you probably get easy replies that are guides to that help you make your own mind up. In Australia we have a forum called whirlpool (the locals often jokingly call it 'wingepool' 🙂 ) - that one is nearly all English and is a www service - but I know there are many microblogging service in countries other than English speaking or countries where English is simply 'a supported language' and not 'the stated primary language'. Also often apps that are used as interfaces to micrblogging services have additional language support that you sometimes don't get on the world wide web communication channels.

Eg. Some companies use systems like WeChat or Whatsapp and they are Chinese and US headquartered I think so are respectively in simplified Mandarin and in US English. For a software system or set of software systems and company that has some measure of legal obligation the whole 'servicing people' is usually second to 'building things that people can use and find joy with or learn from or take advantage of'. So you probably don't have much or rapid success in multilingual matters - I think there are 200 countries and 7000 languages. Imagine trying to do support for that number of languages!

You'd probably not be so good at building amazing things then. So good companies, when not forced, usually make best efforts as they can make time and find time and as their finances and financial obligations (debt) allow. I guess, Ai itself will help in these areas 🙂 but still, even in Australia when we try to service minorities (eg people with vision or physical or hearing or transportation impairments) we often fail as it's so difficult. So it's not uncommon for a govt Dept or building or company or person to try help by making themselves available but not succeeding across all expected or legally binding areas.

Eg. Did you know that website (all of them) are supposed to be legally accessible to all people of all disabilities (or as is reasonable) - so imagine trying to make text to speech work or a chat system work across 7000 languages.. it's 🙂 difficult. So the authorities and governments know this as they struggle with it themselves, so everyone simply tries their best and usually doesn't succeed to satisfy everyone or even the majority of people. Hmm what other observations can I make....

PS. I don't think all of those 7000 languages even have written text, so trying to be entirely accessible to everyone in every way meeting every claim or demand is impossible. So people have to be kind and patient with each other and try to avoid making things difficult as with every additional complex change or meeting of an expectation a company or government becomes larger and less able to do stuff other than adminstration and paperwork and communications.

Yeah I got that issue posting the roamanised version (as Google translate produced for me). Um, I think you have to use something other than discord. Eg. To others, as both aircraft and cars need factories or buildings and raw materials to be processed and manipulated, walking is factually non polluting. However as it's slow, are you creating pollution by walking when you could take an ebike or escooter or eskateboard or train? Are you walking barefoot or did your shoes create pollution?

There's a lot of difficulty in labelling things as fact. It's why science tends to be successful (at some things). I like to use other words. Eg. Belief. Is it a fact or a belief? Then you can work out if you're being fed or told or are reading something honestly (true) or that is a lie (false). So it gets tricky. Some things are true and are fact. When using ChatGPT for novel writing, it has a very strong tendency to fall into the pattern of writing each passage as: a description of the action and dialog; then a switch of tone to a reflective coda that it repeats with only the slightest of variations at the end of Every. Damn. Passage. Once it uses such a pattern once, it becomes part of the context, and it's near-impossible to prevent in every subsequent passage. Has anyone discovered a way to prevent this awful repetition?
Eg, in the middle of a gruelling swordfight which brings the hero to his knees at the low point of the story: "For Andrew, it was just another display of the hardships of the world, and he resolved to never let it beat him.... (and two more paragraphs in this vein)" - no! That's completely inappropriate in the middle of an action scene, but no matter how much I tell it not to add the reflective coda at the end, it just won't stop.

Thinking about it, it's a similar pattern to when using ChatGPT for other purposes, except there it replaces the reflective coda with something more like "It is important to note... (paragraph of tripe)" - it might be that the training that makes it generate those safety passages also breaks its ability to write a narrative that maintains a consistent tone.

If you create your own application you still need to follow the TOS but if you're not breaking them you can use the system message to steer the direction of the model, works best with gpt-4

Well you have to remember that the API costs money to use on a token basis and you have to take care of moderation (there is a free moderation endpoint provided by OpenAI). If you can handle all of that you can create a preset system message that will dictate on how it will respond to user queries

hi I am looking for either the policy language from openai or research that states that a user's output data is private and that user's personal output could then be shared OR VALIDATED with/by other users. I know it can't and the privacy policy and terms state what data can be used for but it still does not explicitly say that. The question I am trying to answer, with a valid resource is this. "if a user has let's say produces an essay or business plan in ChatGPT and gets the output, another user can't simply paste that output into their ChatGPT session and ask - did you create this and get a valid response" I know that is not the case and it doesn't work that way and the output is considered private user data and that would violate the policy....but was hoping for something that explicitly states this. Is there a way to reset context when using the API? I'm trying to make a simple UI with python using chat completions with a text box for user inputs and outputs, letting you edit both and all previous messages then converting those into a list of messages for the chat completion, but I keep hitting a brick wall with tokens - every request seems like it's adding tokens even if the messages I'm using in the request are unchanged or even some removed. I suspect it's recording the context of every previous message and that's tallying up to an inevitable wall.

For example I go over the token limit by 20, so I delete the last message of the conversation for the user and chat bot. I retry, and I'm now over the token limit by 800.

I feel like I'm probably misusing the api, but I'm not sure how else to achieve this with all messages being editable.

if you're using chat completions in the api it'll maintain the context given by the conversation, but on the website iirc it'll shave off the oldest parts of the conversation when it starts to exceed the token limit, so you'll have to remind it of the context - I might be wrong about this though
