for some reason my java wont open. it will immediately close when i try to check it with the prompt. and I'm also having a hard time trying to set the path since ever time i download the java and extract the file it wont show up on my download list. I'm sure I missed a very important step.

If you downloaded and extracted java, you didn't do it properly. Java is an install, you run the installer and it installs java properly onto your system
