I don’t specifically know how it works but it you’re economy does worse if your foreign relations are bad, so having better relations with the bigger economies means your economy does better

That’s how recessions work, if a big country enters it, everyone else follows suite because they have high foreign dependency

If you want to manually sanction them
Then there is an option in actions called “diplomatic interference” which is free and hurts your relations with them

They lower trade and dependency on them
