#

I hope it stays active and the recruitiof recruiting members keep ongoing

#

Do inspire others to switch to linux ya'll

pallid marsh

lyric pollen
pallid marsh

stupid companies dont support linux because of that

so no one switches

#

so no companies support

pallid marsh

windows just doesnt have posix and has half assed aliases for ls

#

we should follow the steps of chatro/student league and force linux

crude sluice

If I had some cash lying around, I wouldve made a small cyber cafe that has linux machines

pallid marsh
#

it would be cool

#

what i want is to promote linux to the educational institutions

#

for example in bangladesh

lyric pollen
pallid marsh
#

our book teaches us propitiatory softwares with free trial that are only made for windows and mac

pallid marsh
#

google should just put normal linux in their chromebook at this point

crude sluice
lyric pollen
pallid marsh

and you know what they suggested for video editing?

camtasia

crude sluice

I think books never update the material, only the cover, page order and the occasional new info

pallid marsh
lyric pollen
#

w8 our school's have chromebooks?
since when?

pallid marsh
#

everything was updated to add newer spywares

crude sluice

is this what camtasia does to keep a hold of their ever declining marketshare?

I am going to OS Hop again

I don't want all the hassle of Arch, I just want an OS which I can call home and do all the things I need 😭

Manjaro might be bloated

but I don't want to have an empty OS

imho, use fedora with kde, or a debian distro with kde like kubuntu. Both of em will be less of a hassle than arch

I would use Kubuntu then

Cinnamon desktop is not my type

pallid marsh
lyric pollen
pallid marsh

you can even install kde on linux mint but its unofficial

#

so i wouldnt recommend

lyric pollen

just saying is it or is it not

pallid marsh
#

manjaro is bad because it breaks

they hold back packages and that gets into problem with the aur

lyric pollen
fallen raptor

I hate MacOS

lyric pollen

gnome feels like its good unlike mac os

crude sluice

the dev team has also done quite questionable decisions so I don't recommend manjaro to anyone

lyric pollen

if you want arch, get proper arch

i think this one sums it up well

fallen raptor
#

I'm starting to fear that my USB is going to die

#

Because of those all write cycles

pallid marsh

nah it wont

#

thats not alot compared to what i did to kill my usb

#

i believe my usb was just a bad one

fallen raptor
#

Cruzer blade is a good USB right?

pallid marsh
crude sluice
#

If you think your usb still got some life in it, get kubuntu or tumbleweed

lyric pollen
crude sluice
#

and that

pallid marsh
#

when i was installing dependencies for waydroid on arch linux running hyprland

fallen raptor
pallid marsh
#

it just died mid game

#

it is no longer recognizable

fallen raptor
#

Every USB drive is rated for an amount of data write cycles

#

Like a battery

#

It'll run out one day

crude sluice
#

or actually, just use plain debian like me. It won't look nice out of the box, but it's the only distro that "just works"

pallid marsh
#

like years

lyric pollen
pallid marsh
crude sluice
pallid marsh
#

even though gnome is most popular on gnome

i meant debain*

crude sluice
pallid marsh
crude sluice
#

I mean, I was able to install it on my first try so I guess yeah

pallid marsh
#

i think its character user interface installation

crude sluice
#

and that was in 2021 or something

lyric pollen
#

i think ill stick with fedora
(tho the recent update may have broken my sound card and brightnessbar)

pallid marsh
#

not that much friendly especially when their good isos are hidden beneath

crude sluice
#

what do you mean by good isos?

#

the testing and unstable ver?

pallid marsh
#

hmm the ones non free i think

#

the ones with nvidia drivers and stuff

crude sluice
#

I mainly have all amd rigs so im good with the free only stuff

lyric pollen
crude sluice
#

potato chips has an old intel pc iirc, so he doesnt need the nonfree stuff aswell

pallid marsh
pallid marsh
crude sluice
#

you don't need rpm fusion in debain, apt is pretty good

lyric pollen
pallid marsh
#

TF

lyric pollen
pallid marsh
#

am i in drugs guys?

pallid marsh
#

ok

lyric pollen
#

i take it that fedora is more compatible with it?

pallid marsh
#

btw fedora and debain are two different distros that arent a fork of any other ones

#

so they naturally are different

#

fedora uses rpm and dnf package manager while debain uses deb and dpkg with apt as its frontend

fallen raptor
pallid marsh
#

intel and amd provide mostly open source drivers

#

i dont know in detail but nvidia is nasty compared to them

crude sluice
#

We should create a google document with distros we recommend, with some info on why we chose em

#

It seems like a lot of people are considering dualbooting or even maining linux, so I think it could be quite helpful

pallid marsh
#

fr

pallid marsh
#

btw why does gnome put so many desktop session entries

fallen raptor
pallid marsh
pallid marsh
#

they are really powerful

fallen raptor
#

Pretty much the same as AMD

pallid marsh
#

and softwares like davinci resolve work better on nvidia

fallen raptor
#

Yeah Nvidia is for content creators

pallid marsh
#

i think i prefer intel

#

if i ever make a computer i gotta try out intel

lyric pollen
fallen raptor
#

Yeah I'm pretty sure they fixed all the driver issues

pallid marsh
#

are you living under rock or in an alternative universe where intel died years ago?

crude sluice
#

Hopefully intel gets their shit sorted with the cpus, amd needs competition

pallid marsh
#

so intel gpus arent even considered by anyone?

crude sluice
#

I think theyre decent, thats about it

pallid marsh
#

hmm ok

#

btw linux updates are the best

cerulean vine

whats up penguins?

cerulean vine

total download size: 620.03 MiB while Net upgrade size: 1.69 MiB

crude sluice

Intel seems to be competiting against amd, so one day it could be that the GPU wars will be between Intel vs nvidia

pallid marsh

its crazy how nvidia is rocking the gpu market and has no competition

pallid marsh

kde keeps beating them in every aspect tbh

crude sluice

but my brain for some unknown reason, hates kde

cerulean vine
#

xfce lover

crude sluice
#

I still use lots of k apps, like krita, kate, kdenlive

#

ill go back to xfce when they support wayland

pallid marsh
#

i like them both and hate xfce for its default ugly look

#

i know its regarded as the most stable and really customizable

crude sluice
#

all the good things minus the bad

pallid marsh
#

damn i got 600mb left on my Loonix partition

fallen raptor
#

I had a download size of 2000mb and net upgrade of 5mb 💀

pallid marsh

i always use sudo pacman -uyS

#

bruh hyprland runs clearly nested inside hyprland

fallen raptor

💀

pallid marsh
#

nice wallpaper

#

except its purely glitch and nothing else

surreal pine
#

I don't see why you'd switch from endeavour to manjaro 💀

#

switching to something like archcraft would make sense since you get the customized configs easily that way

surreal pine
#

whatever manjaro has in terms of looks can be easily done in other distros. I don't think they customize much. probably only colors and desktop layout

cerulean vine
#

You could try cachyos

#

They have good repo, nice themes, great staffs and unlike manjaro they care and don't let their certificates to expire

#

I myself use cachyos

pallid marsh

guys should i ask for help in hyprland discord?

A response saying "Just Don't Upgrade" for Stability, is akin to telling someone "Just Don't Breathe" because the Air Quality is Bad. It ignores the reason why regular updates are needed for security and functionality.

Moreover, what if another backdoor gets found like the liblzma one a couple of months ago? Upgrading will be necessary and waiting around to upgrade just for it to be "more stable" is absurd. Debian and others fast tracks security upgrades so I get the best of both worlds.

And you seemed to have misunderstood, Nightly builds aren't bleeding edge. But the fact that Arch ships out "stable" builds of packages more frequently than other distributions is. It's can be a benefit to many, but not me.

This is what Debian Testing and Fedora does better for my use case, packages are "screened" longer relative to Arch then shipped out. A bonus of that extra time is developers get more time to update and fix issues on their apps for example, so it don't get a seizure when one or more dependency gets updated/deleted/whatever.

dusty ibex
# crude sluice A response saying "Just Don't Upgrade" for Stability, is akin to telling someone...

fully incorrect

regular updates are needed for security and functionality. waiting around to upgrade just for it to be "more stable" is absurd
debian/fedora both waits/pauses updates so you're not getting any latest security or functionality in them either. for example try upgrading latest gnome package in existing debian system.

backdoor gets found like the liblzma
packages are downgradable in arch
and backdoors can be hidden for multiple years affecting all distros that you consider stable.

arch has 3 types of packages from stable, nightly(bleeding edge which you call) to LTS (linux, linux-git, linux-lts)

So I'm getting this issue trying to fix the resolution

#

T^T

crude sluice
#

Arch's philosphy entails that even the stable ver is still at the bleeding edge of tech

#

Hence why I prefer Debian instead of dealing with arch's hassle again

pallid marsh
#

it can break with updates though

#

but its really easy to fix things

#

debain is definitely easier to maintain at the cost of updates but arch isnt all that bad

crude sluice
pallid marsh
#

especially even debain isnt safe from having bad versions of software at the moment i think

crude sluice
#

maybe because im kinda old, tinkering aint fun as it used to be

crude sluice
pallid marsh
#

but arch is better than ubuntu based distros

crude sluice

moving to debain-testing fixed all of my issues but flatpaks are nice and fixes all these issues as well

what if another backdoor gets found like the liblzma one a couple of months ago? Upgrading will be necessary

regular updates are needed for security and functionality

package updates =/= security updates
keep a fixed opinion.

security updates are always fast tracked
security fixes comes as bug fixes. a bug fix of gnome 47 always can't be backported to old gnome 43(debian 12) when there is lot of code differences. distro's security updates here doesn't include all bug fixes which is impossible without updating gnome.

arch's philosphy entails that even the stable version is still at the bleeding edge of tech
firefox, firefox-beta, firefox-dev, firefox-nightly, firefox-lts 5 packages in arch.
do you call everything here bleeding edge? this is completely upto package maintainers. stable version is marked by mozilla, not arch.

Firstly, Drill into your head that nothing in the world is fully secure. Security Updates are not here to only fix bugs, they often include new shit or outright remove existing ones. If a vulnerability exists at a hardware level for example, patches are released as soon as possible to make the exploit harder to abuse. If there is a vulnerability that has been discovered and a patch ready, it'll be shipped by Fedora, Debian and Arch at roughly the same time.

Moreover, not having the latest version of gnome or whatever, can't hinder my ability to get security updates. There is a reason why a majority of servers in the world still run Debian and not Arch.

Besides if a new bug does get introduced and subsequently patched on a newer version of gnome like you mentioned. It won't make the current version of Debian with an older ver of gnome any less secure. The bug that causes the vulnerability just does not exist.

By the time the newer version of gnome ships to users, the fix will already be applied.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what it means by "bleeding edge".
Look up the fastfetch github and see what's the version number available on the Debian and Arch repos. Both of them are stable, but the "bleeding edge" aspect comes from the "newness" of the package. Even though both of them are "stable", the newer one might:

  • have newer bugs that have remained hidden
  • started using a newer ver of a dependency, whereas most other programs still use the older ver of said dependency.
  • Be incompatible with other programs which use this as a dependency.

The newer bugs can become a vulnerability in the future, and the mismatched dependencies can cause a sleuth of programs to just break/not run/whatever or worse, break the entire system.

This is also why its called "bleeding edge", it can make you metaphorically "bleed". Fedora, SUSE and Ubuntu are often called "cutting edge" since while they have newer packages, they're often not as up to date as Arch. An edge sharp but not enough to cause bleeding.

Too lazy to backread

Idk what y'all yapping about
Arch isn't beta thing, beta shit is in testing repository 💀, stable shit comes to mainline repositories, well whatever developers call stable that is

blazing vault
# dusty ibex ah yes

Only nixos is capable of keeping multiple versions of stuff due to how it links and shit 💀

dusty ibex
#

i'm using bottom package. pacman checks if lib name is listed and keeps. so credit goes to both i would say

blazing vault
blazing vault
#

No sophistication there

#

Sadly can't prevent package fs conflicts, if a package has smth that conflicts with filesystem(due to whatever another package installation had placed in there) pacman is unable to dynamically link different fs spots for different packages

dusty ibex
blazing vault
dusty ibex
#

and apps can load dependencies conditionally. for example chrome can run on any of gtk3 or gtk4

#

notice how they give different names for each version

#

now if a package relies on "python313" and other package on "python" then pacman will keep both

#

this acts as min version, max version. giving maintainers enough time to adapt to latest python package

Asking Reddit if Arch is bleeding edge is like asking a fruitarian if they can actually live on a diet of nothing but fruits. I can easily find a Reddit thread where most people agree that Arch is 'bleeding edge': https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/6862gr/why_is_arch_linux_so_bleeding_edge/

crude sluice
# dusty ibex it can if same dependency is published with different names(ids). e.g. gtk4, gtk...

iirc all package managers suffers from dependency issues, often exacerbated on Arch. GTK versions(1, 2, 3, 4) like you mentioned are more akin to python versions(2 and 3), they're not meant to "completely" replace one another but kind work alongside, even though there is a "superior" one. People naturally switch over to the newer one for the benefits until very few people are still using the old one, soon after the old one gets axed.

Appimages shouldve been more popular than theyre now, they solve all these and much more.

One thing that confuses me about arch, when downloading something from the AUR, wouldn't the built package downloaded be built for another system?

surreal pine
dusty ibex
#

aur packages are simply bash scripts that uses compilers (gcc, rustc, go) to generate binaries and puts into respective folders usually /usr/bin/. this binary should work on every system unless they have different cpu architecture or relies on other dynamic shared ".so" files. then .so files also need to be compiled beforehand, pacman handle this automatic.

surreal pine
#

so the latest you can find

dusty ibex

in windows these "so" are known as "dll" files

Interesting

is it relatively easy to upload to the aur?

probably. haven't tried myself. bunch of guidelines

I haven't touched python or any languages since highschool. Thinking about creating a super simple barebones markdown text editor to learn and a grip on python and making apps and other stuff

If I get around in doing in that, I can get upload in AUR for feedback and stuff

Delisting packages there seems to be pretty simple as well
