@cerulean vine u suggested to mention u for any help. so doing it
do u know any good screenshot taker for linux? i know i already have the PrntScr button for screenshots. but i really miss my windows days in this case when i used to use Lightshot. i could edit the ss like writing a text, giving arrow indicators, etc before capturing it. Ctrl+C would only copy the ss in my clipboard, and Ctrl+S would save it in the file system. but now, the default ss taker in ubuntu, doesn't allow me to edit my ss on the go. also it saves the ss in the file system which i have to clean up later

wide tendon

but like

isnt that immutable

#

does it even have a gui software center?

#

@blazing vault

dusty ibex
# wide tendon like I said, the average user cannot fix that

who can't fix a grub issue with so many tutorials available should not come to linux. not also ubuntu. and grub issues can happen with any destro because bootloaders are not part of destro.
even as a new user i never used grub. there is lightweight built-in systemd-boot. and in todays uefi systems you can boot os directly without bootloaders which i'm using right now.

dusty ibex
# wide tendon you will find every package there

to install Hyprland in Arch you have to do
pacman -S hyprland (Easy, install never fails/stable, this is a maintained package because arch is popular)

in Ubuntu (hard, you have to build yourself because the maintainer and almost nobody cares for ubuntu, and since Ubuntu generally behind with dependencies build install can also fail/unstable)
sudo apt-get install -y meson wget build-essential ninja-build cmake-extras cmake gettext gettext-base fontconfig libfontconfig-dev libffi-dev libxml2-dev libdrm-dev libxkbcommon-x11-dev libxkbregistry-dev libxkbcommon-dev libpixman-1-dev libudev-dev libseat-dev seatd libxcb-dri3-dev libegl-dev libgles2 libegl1-mesa-dev glslang-tools libinput-bin libinput-dev libxcb-composite0-dev libavutil-dev libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libxcb-ewmh2 libxcb-ewmh-dev libxcb-present-dev libxcb-icccm4-dev libxcb-render-util0-dev libxcb-res0-dev libxcb-xinput-dev xdg-desktop-portal-wlr

  • manually build latest wayland, wayland-protocols, libdisplay-info like above + then cd hyprland && make install not to forget you can't update/uninstall manual builds with apt, you are on your own to manage this.
dusty ibex
# wide tendon and ubuntu now even has the latest desktop enviroments

you can't install the latest gnome 45 on existing ubuntu 22. have to wait for ubuntu maintainers to release and then upgrade the whole destro.
in arch there no such thing as system upgrade or package version incompatibility with destro version. therefore arch is always most latest.

blazing vault
#

and ppl be saying ubuntu is easy, bro nix seems so much simpler than ubuntu lol

#

arch is byfar the easiest

countless examples like hyprland that proves arch is more easy, popular(maintainers prioritizes arch most), arch wiki is biggest linux knowledge base alive, every package available in aur, pure linux makes it stable, for every level of users, endeavouros comes with preinstalled apps, without grub for extreme beginners.

too much text

#

how do you guys have this much paitence to read all of this

#

Howww

#

I need patience

#

ok

#

I have read 0 books in my life

#

but read a lot of manga

#

Idk man but why would a beginner even think about using arch or wms

#

Just use mint and have a good time

cerulean vine
#

The always works distro

#

Best for beginners if u ask me

#

If arch is too much mint it is

wide tendon
#

this aint windows dawg

#

arch aint even that hard

vagrant crag
#

Nice elitism bro

vagrant crag
#

how do you expect a new fresh born linux user to understand arch

#

most of the new users use Ubuntu/mint

#

And have a good time

#

and if they want to go deep in the linux world then they will think about using arch or another distro

vagrant crag
#

It might not be that hard

#

But for new users it's hard bro

#

Imagine using vanilla arch as your first linux distro

#

We have to make linux as easy as possible dor the windows users to switch

#

or else windows monopoly shall remain for ever

cerulean vine
wide tendon
#

the other people disagrees

#

i was at the opposite end of the spectrum tho

#

this catfish and rakib guy was saying how arch is easier than ubuntu 😭😭

#

like seriously

#

even 'user-friendly' arch distros aint allat

vagrant crag
#

i was having a bad time, sorry for taking your jokes seriously

wide tendon
#

i mean arch became more accessible now through archinstall

#

but like you still need some terminal knowledge

#

moral of the story: stop reccomending arch to beginners

#

im looking at you @blazing vault

#

this a topic even at r/archlinux

wide tendon
#

they have arch mirrors in Bangladesh

#

huge W

blazing vault
#

now arch derivatives are suitable for beginners, perhaps more so than ubuntu

#

using manjaro is sooo much easier than ubuntu

#

see

#

ubuntu is a errorhub
giving linux its "buggy" reputation

wide tendon
#

its from 1 yr ago 😭

blazing vault
#

lol

#

whatever
arch aint ahrd

#

hard*

wide tendon
#

i didnt have a bad experience using it on vm

blazing vault
#

well, those were the mistakes from manjaro team

wide tendon
#

but like you can have conflicts with aur packages since they are a stable release

blazing vault
#

lol

#

it will not open right away, it will error out

wide tendon
#

thats the point of arch tho????

blazing vault
#

no

#

big mirrors are

wide tendon
#

yes

#

no

#

its the rolling model and aur

blazing vault
#

ppa: add this

add that

no need to bother w that

#

thats the point of manjaro, not arch

blazing vault
wide tendon
#

thats what im sayin

blazing vault
wide tendon
#

dude

blazing vault
#

point is

you literally cannot 1 click install steam in debians

#

you can on arch

#

whats easier

wide tendon
#

im saying to not reccomend arch to beginners

#

i can install arch the 'actual' way if I wanted to

blazing vault
wide tendon
#

its not a big problem for me lmao

blazing vault
wide tendon
#

ubuntu is objectively better for newbies

blazing vault
wide tendon
blazing vault
#

objectively worse

wide tendon
#

ight man you win 😭

blazing vault
#

i dont need to manually switch to ubuntu for that

wide tendon
#

did you really try to install steam in a distrobox container

blazing vault
wide tendon
#

omfg 💀💀💀

blazing vault
#

as a matter of fact, i play my csgo from distrobox container

blazing vault
wide tendon
#

ofc youre gonna have issues 💀

blazing vault
blazing vault
wide tendon
#

it has barely any packages installed

#

😭

blazing vault
#

yea nah why would they need ubuntu container when they got arch base

wide tendon
#

you really installed the most stripped down version of ubuntu then complain when a video game dosent work halalbruh

blazing vault
#

i play my cs2 from containers

wide tendon
#

why tho

blazing vault
#

i have my reasoning, i keep somethings seperated

wide tendon
#

do you perhaps fear the instability of arch? pepewow pepewow pepewow

#

no way

#

ifkr 💀😭

#

arch is not suitable for beginners because of It's bleeding edge model

blazing vault
#

orr just use default arch mirrors

wide tendon
#

i tried 3 different distros in vms

#

no ubuntu tho

blazing vault
#

suprise fedora is semi rolling distro

not stable like ubuntu

#

damn do i really need to record this shii for you guyz to believe

#

damn

#

w8

#

lol

#

bro i use gnome

#

arch gets its not for everyone reputation from not having installer

#

its derivatives do have installer

#

bro that was the point of base arch

thats why derivatives exist
for example endavour os comes packed with everything

#

damn

#

what do you think eos is?

#

arch+everything

#

and i have never ran into that,

#

dependency hell is a big deal, arch mirrors would be wasted money if those actually existed lol

#

we arent living in 2013

#

why so damn slow, damn ubuntu servers suck

#

dont use aur, as single as that

#

obs is 1 click install

#

why you getting obs from aur

#

obs is 1 click install, if you have messed up wayland-qt config

then it is on you

#

OMFG BRO
THAT IS FOR EVERY DAMN DISTRO UNDER THE SUN

#

YOU NEED PROPER DAMN CONFIG FOR WAYLAND

#

ARCH JUST HAS DIFFERENT INSTALL SYSTEM THAN FEDORA/UBUNTU

EVERYHTING ELSE IS LITERALLY SAME

#

you can literally do the same in eos

#

whats your point

#

installing in here is easier, aint it?

thats all, all other configing is literally same as any other distro

arch doesnt have magic extra configs you need to do

#

yea i never disagreed to issues but dependency hell doesnt exist in arch mirror, it is cohesive

#

yes you do, in eos
not in arch base

arch base dont have env variables set

eos does

#

thats the point of eos

#

if you dumb, you use eos

#

thats that

#

i am dealing with buncha noobs who dont even know what they are talking about

#

how do you not know all configing is same across all distros

#

arch doesnt have some magic extra configs

#

just installing packge is dfferent

#

bro couldnt run godot and blender in fedora for half his lifetime

but still says arch worse even tho i have been running them without errors here

wide tendon
wide tendon
wide tendon
#

most people got brekages from arch more than any other distro

#

usually newbies face this alot

wide tendon
#

bro seriously thinks arch is good for new users

#

and better than every distro

#

its just another linux distro

wide tendon
blazing vault
blazing vault
wide tendon
#

then what do you mean by proper wayland config?

#

if it dosent work it dosent work

blazing vault
#

thats avg qt exp for you
it was broken in all distros at some point

#

i had to run certain qt apps with xcb in wayland session

#

it was very early on wayland's journey, so would make sence

blazing vault
#

lol

#

your pc is cursed

#

all in all, what part of arch do you think isnt suitable for beginners?

it's derivatives preconfigured and shit , steam installs in 1 click

why wont it be suitable, you literally got pamac for installing packages the gui way

#

and the fastest mirrors

#

@trim acorn

#

and window managers arent exclusive to arch, it is everywhere

you guyz dont seem to get it, all gnu-linux components are cross compatible between all distros
only thing different is how manjor distros package stuff, and versioning differences
that is literally it

#

demn, i just dont notice any issue for me

#

kde feels like dog shet

#

lol

#

i dont use kde

#

too complex

#

gnome so much better in my exp

#

basically can just use js to make extentions, the simplicity feels good

blazing vault

nah kde by design feels inferior

Arch isn't really as confusing as people make it out to be
If people want to give it a go, that's up to them to decide

#

also the cli installer just looks intimidating, and there are tons of install scripts

#

there are plenty of people who know how it works

#

i'm not saying to start out with arch, but if they're interested they can give it a go

#

and maybe put together something like this 😉

#

have you ever installed arch?

#

if that's your opinion, then fair enough

#

i like the control that arch gives you, but i agree it's less user friendly than say, fedora

#

if people want to use arch, thats up to them

perhaps you may consider using nixos, all os states are stored in a configuration.nix file
you can even use home manager to implement home configs

#

like theme, icons, desktop environment, login manager, kernel, kernel modules, apps, systemd services, environment variables all set in stone, basically as close to unbreakable as it gets

problem is, you gotta learn nix language
