Have you considered making the z-virus an actual playstyle when the infection hits the first major breakpoint, the change to your vision at 80%. A new buff (called Zombiefied!) that greatly increases Strength, Stamina regeneration and the Fisticuffs skill (Such a large increase that you would want to use no other weapon) yet lower Intelligence and Agility to very low levels. It should also disable being able to use any form of ranged weaponry. Melee weapons, tools and consumables, however, would still be usable, although Fisticuffs would still be the best option. The player could try using anti-viral meds to stay in this state indefinitely, reaping the huge benefits to the virus buff but never actually turning. Perhaps at 90% infection rate an addition buff (called Feral! ) could be applied further buffing Strength, Stamina, Fisticuffs and run speed. As usual, if the player can't manage the infection, it would still kill at 100%. Another note that is in this condition, rotten meat and infected water would be beneficial. Sounds like it might be fun.

I like this idea, but I think a perk set would accomplish this greatly.
I was thinking for the 80-89.9% infection you get glowing yellow eyes and for the latter 90-99.9% you get the blue eyes. Giving the player a way out by lowering infection below 80% is always an option if they don't like the new playstyle.
Already suggested something similar to this months ago, pretty sure it won't take off into live 🙂
Another idea - at 90% infection , zombies think you’re one of them and don’t attack you, unless you’re really close 🤷♂️. Perhaps only smart blue eyed zombies are an exception (they always know who you are)
