To avoid nerd poling you should only be able to put items directly on the ground, not on top of each other. Also not on the wall.
Exceptions are building blocks and pictures, of course.

Well this really just means setting the StabilitySupport proprerty properly on various things

stacking barrels should be fine, floating barrels on a wall probably not
